India's commercial capital must 'make way' for wedding of son of Asia's richest man

The wedding of Anant Ambani, the youngest son of businessman Mukesh Ambani, and his longtime girlfriend Radhika Merchant is considered one of the most lavish events in India this year. Police have classified it as a “public event” due to the presence of Indian and international VIPs. As a result, traffic in key areas of Mumbai will be given priority to accommodate wedding guests, Reuters reported on July 10.

Given the scale of the event, roads near the venue, the Jio World Convention Center owned by Mr. Ambani, will be closed from afternoon to night on July 12-15, with only wedding-related vehicles allowed to pass. This has angered locals, especially in Mumbai, which is already notoriously congested.

Although organizers are keeping the identities of those who will attend under wraps, it is expected to be a star-studded affair. On July 5, singer Justin Bieber performed for hundreds of guests at a private pre-wedding concert.

In March, singer Rihanna performed at three days of pre-wedding festivities in the western state of Gujarat. Billionaires Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg were among the 1,200 guests who attended the event. In May, the Ambani family took a lavish pre-wedding trip to Europe, with 800 guests including Bollywood stars and cricketers.

The wedding on July 12 will feature traditional Hindu rituals and a two-day reception. On July 15, there will be a party for Mr Ambani's family staff.

Some Mumbai residents complained that the wedding had affected their personal activities by restricting travel. "How can it be a public event? It's amazing to see the special treatment given to the hardships of ordinary people," commented one X account.
