The Vung Ang - Bung Expressway has a total investment of more than 12,540 billion VND, nearly 56 km long, of which the section through Ha Tinh is 13 km long and Quang Tri is more than 42 km long. The starting point is at the intersection of Ky Hoa commune (Ha Tinh), connecting Ham Nghi - Vung Ang Expressway; the end point is at Bo Trach commune (Quang Tri), connecting with Bung - Van Ninh Expressway at Phong Nha intersection.
The route passes through many complex terrains such as hills, lakes, and requires the construction of 33 bridges, including 28 bridges on the highway and 5 overpasses. The most important item is the Deo But tunnel through Dong Nang range (Ha Tinh), nearly 1 km long, with a capital of more than 1,000 billion VND, designed with two tubes, the left tunnel center is 45 m away from the right tunnel center. The left tunnel is 716 m long, the right tunnel is 840 m long, each tunnel is 15 m wide and 8 m high. In the investment phase, the right tunnel tube in the North - South direction will be put into operation first, the left tunnel tube will be completed later.
On the route, there is also a Gianh River overpass about 2.8 km long, 17.5 m wide, 4 lanes, with an investment of more than 1,000 billion VND. This is the longest bridge on the North-South Expressway through Quang Tri province and is now completed and ready for traffic.
Phase 1 of the project has a scale of 4 lanes, a 17 m wide roadbed, no emergency lanes, instead emergency stops are arranged, and a design speed of 80-90 km/h.
The Van Ninh - Cam Lo Expressway is 65.5 km long, with a capital of nearly VND9,920 billion, passing through Quang Tri province. The starting point is in Van Ninh commune, connecting to the Bung - Van Ninh Expressway at the intersection of National Highway 9B; the ending point is in Hieu Giang commune, connecting to the Cam Lo - La Son Expressway.
The route has relatively flat terrain, only the section through An Ma Lake has to cut mountains. The project includes 4 interchanges, 30 bridges, 41 underpasses and 240 culverts of all kinds. The first phase design has a cross-section of 4 lanes, speed of 60-90 km/h, no emergency lane, only a few stops are arranged every 4-5 km. The Van Ninh - Cam Lo section runs almost parallel to Ho Chi Minh road, at many intersections, underpasses will be built to ensure safe traffic.
The 11.5 km long Hoa Lien - Tuy Loan Expressway, with a capital of more than VND 2,100 billion, started construction in September 2023, and will also open to traffic on August 19. The route is the final section connecting La Son - Hoa Lien Expressway with Da Nang - Quang Ngai Expressway, passing through Ba Na commune, Hoa Khanh ward and Lien Chieu ward (Da Nang). The route is designed with 4 lanes, speed 60-80 km/h.
Of the 12 North-South expressway projects phase 2 (2021-2025), which started construction on January 1, 2023 with a total capital of VND 146,990 billion and a length of 729 km, the sections of Bai Vot - Ham Nghi, Ham Nghi - Vung Ang, Bung - Van Ninh (through Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri) and 70 km of Van Phong - Nha Trang have been completed and put into operation on April 30.
The three projects of Vung Ang - Bung, Van Ninh - Cam Lo and Hoa Lien - Tuy Loan with a total length of 208 km when put into operation will connect with the exploited sections, forming the 750 km long Hanoi - Da Nang expressway. The Ministry of Construction aims to complete all remaining projects through Binh Dinh, Quang Ngai, Can Tho, Ca Mau by December this year, connecting the entire North - South expressway from Lang Son to Ca Mau with a length of 2,063 km.
