Lieu Coc Twin Towers relic after 2 archaeological excavations

The Hue City People's Committee assigned the Hue City Department of Culture and Sports to prepare a report requesting permission from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to grant exploration and excavation permits in accordance with regulations. In addition, the construction of a shelter to protect the Lieu Coc Twin Towers relic was also assigned to the Hue City Department of Culture and Sports to preside over and guide the Kim Tra Ward People's Committee to determine the appropriate scale and area for the construction of the shelter, make a detailed estimate and report to the Hue City People's Committee for consideration.

Previously, after completing phase 2 of archaeological exploration and excavation of the Lieu Coc twin towers, the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City also sent a preliminary report to the People's Committee of Hue City. This exploration and excavation was carried out for more than 1 month with an area of 66m2. The results have completely revealed the architectural foundation structure of the North Tower and relatively fully determined the foundation structure of the South Tower, along with determining part of the structure, boundaries and distances of the north and south walls.

The archaeological team also collected 9,380 specimens and artifacts, mainly focusing on architectural materials, architectural decorations, stele fragments, enameled pottery, porcelain, earthenware and bronze metal pieces.

After the end of the excavation, the experts also had a preliminary information session and were highly appreciated by experts and researchers for the results. In which, it can be affirmed that the Lieu Coc Twin Towers relic is an architectural complex distributed on a low alluvial mound, located on the right bank, near the Bo River.

The relic is planned in a flat area with 2 main temples and towers in the center, surrounded by a wall system separating the central area from the outskirts, the entrance is through the Gate tower architecture. Lieu Coc Twin Towers is the only relic in Vietnam today with two main temples and towers (usually there is 1 tower or 3 main towers).

From the results of the second phase of excavation as well as the initial assessments, the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City proposed that the People's Committee of Hue City continue to allow the archaeological excavation of the remaining area (about 200m2). This continued excavation is to identify the overall plan of Lieu Coc Temple and Tower in the most complete and comprehensive way.

This is the most important time to invest in comprehensive research on the Lieu Coc Twin Towers relic, creating the premise for the establishment of a unique Champa cultural space, or even a Champa cultural museum to gather artifacts and documents that Hue possesses to introduce and promote this unique cultural heritage to create a tourism highlight for Kim Tra ward in particular, and the heritage city of Hue in general.

Along with continuing excavation, investing in building a shelter to protect the Lieu Coc Twin Towers relic, avoiding the risk of collapse in the upcoming storm season. In addition, establishing a project to sustainably preserve the Lieu Coc Twin Towers relic to supplement the public investment capital plan for the period 2026 - 2030 in order to promptly preserve and promote the value of the relic to serve socio-economic development, and at the same time, to be a scientific basis for upgrading the Lieu Coc Twin Towers to a special national relic in the soonest time.
