Thep Moi - Outstanding revolutionary journalist

Thep Moi is an outstanding journalist with a very special writing style. His name has always been associated with the revolutionary journalism career. The late journalist Hoang Tung - former Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association once commented, "Thep Moi is a journalist of great stature, a historical witness in the revolutionary processes of our country from 1945 to the early 1990s. He left behind valuable legacies for the mass media, revolutionary literature of our country, and is also a prominent figure of Nhan Dan Newspaper."

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, we would like to introduce the article “Thep Moi - Outstanding revolutionary journalist” by journalist Thai Ha, former Deputy Head of the Monthly People's Committee, former Assistant to journalist Thep Moi.

The person I remember most deeply in my journalism career is journalist Thep Moi. In my memories, there are lunches with him in the old town by Hoan Kiem Lake. Especially when Thep Moi wrote an article, sometimes he walked around the room for 3-4 hours, caught a good idea or a good context, he immediately sat down and wrote brilliantly. I always remember his words: "In my opinion, writing is pouring out emotions, blending intelligence into the pen, each word, each sentence, each article has a soul."

Growing up in Nam Dinh, one of the cradles of the revolution, Thep Moi was soon influenced by the patriotic spirit of some predecessors such as Truong Chinh, Nguyen Duc Canh... In 1943, after graduating from high school, he went to Hanoi to study Law at the University, worked in the National Salvation Youth Union, the National Salvation Cultural Association and began writing for the Autonomous Newspaper - the organ of the Vietnam Student Association.

After the success of the August Revolution in 1945, General Secretary Truong Chinh selected him to work at the Liberation Flag Newspaper . The pen name Thep Moi was recorded under the article “The First Independent Mid-Autumn Festival” published in Liberation Flag on September 20, 1945. The article impressed with its unique writing style, a harmony between romance and reality: “The moon tonight, the bright moon of the first Independence year, no longer has the weak and cold look of the old moons... The moon tomorrow night will be brighter...”.

On November 11, 1945, Liberation Flag stopped publishing and was renamed Truth Newspaper . Thep Moi and his colleagues switched to Truth Newspaper .

In February 1951, at the Second Congress, the Party decided to operate publicly, changed its name to the Vietnam Labor Party and published Nhan Dan Newspaper instead of Su That . On March 11, 1951, the newspaper published its first issue in the Viet Bac War Zone, with Thep Moi reporting on “Our Congress”.

Thep Moi was a reporter, commentator, and key writer for the Truth Newspaper and the People's Newspaper . He wrote many impressive reports and memoirs such as "Viet Bac Victory in Autumn and Winter 1947" - the first reportage with his own style. Next was the reportage "Writing on the spot about Dien Bien Phu" published in parts in the People's Newspaper from April 9 to June 12, 1954.

Talking about Thep Moi's reportage, journalist Hoang Tung once commented that "it has a unique style, reportage - essay, literature and modern literature are unified together".

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory (May 1964), Thep Moi wrote the memoir “Dien Bien Phu, a Vietnamese noun”. The piece of writing glorifies the great “earth-shaking” victory of our army and people.

A masterpiece of New Steel that almost every Vietnamese person knows is “Vietnamese Bamboo” - a commentary on the documentary of the same name made by Polish cinema in 1955.

“Kites fly, bamboo leaf kites fly in the sky...
Bamboo flute, bamboo flute echoes in the sky...
The wind carries the flute, the wind lifts the kite.
The sky is high and vast, the fields are vast, listen to the singing of bamboo in the sky"...

The New Steel is a marvellous artist when it subtly connects and associates the image of “Vietnamese bamboo” and “Cuba’s palm tree” in the work “Cuba’s Pride”: “Just as Vietnamese bamboo is closely associated with the life of rice farmers, the palm tree is a close friend of Cuban sugarcane farmers”. The heroic quality shows the spirit of the Cuban people: “A nation whose entire history is one of long-term heroism cannot help but feel, cannot help but love the extremely proud demeanor of its friends. The pride of the people who have decided: “Fatherland or death!”. And with a very dialectical belief, Cuba raises its fist: “Benseremos” which means “We will win!”.

In the early 60s, Thep Moi worked in the Southern battlefield. From 1968-1971, he was a member of the Central Propaganda Department of the Southern Bureau, Editor-in-Chief of the Liberation Newspaper . During this period, his works vividly reflected the war against the US. Especially the image of the heroic liberation soldiers, who considered fighting the enemy as a normal job. They were the commanders and soldiers in the memoir "A "crucial" battle", "hearts of steel, very emotional and very sensitive". In the memoir "Liberation Army" (Nhan Dan Newspaper , July 1966), the images of the people from the elderly, children, students, farmers, to guerrillas, youth volunteers, liaisons... were all present. Beautifying the indomitable qualities of the southern people were the female guerrillas of the Armed Women's Team in the Cu Chi belt in the memoir "From the Dien Bien Phu battle of Cu Chi land".

Expressing many articles on the subject of war, Thep Moi's writing style is heroic and optimistic, overcoming the fierceness of bombs and sacrifices.

After the complete liberation of the South, Thep Moi wrote many works about the reconstruction of the country. With a deep love for the South and professional responsibility, he volunteered to stay in Ho Chi Minh City to "integrate into life, rush to places where typical events and people appear" - as commented by journalist Hoang Tung. That mark was expressed with full emotion in the article "Returning to the Future" (Nhan Dan Newspaper , September 2, 1975): "Complete, decisive, opening up all directions of bright, vast prospects, is the victory that today each of us is breathing with the air every day, filling our chests... This nation lives forever, lives big, lives beautifully, lives independently, freely, and is truly happy from here on".

Shows many articles on the subject of war,
The New Steel's writing style is cheerful and optimistic,
overcome the brutality of bombs and sacrifice.

One of the typical contributions of Thep Moi on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the liberation of the South is a series of vivid and profound articles summarizing the history and revolution of Vietnam in the column "The time of victory over America" (a total of 17 articles, published every Sunday, from January 21, 1985 to May 26, 1985). At the beginning of "The time of victory over America", Thep Moi confided: "What urges the writer to dare to do something beyond his capacity is to think of young readers who need something to read. How can the bloody wisdom of the time of victory over America be absent from the luggage of the future generation going to the 21st century? From this Tet to the year 2000 is only equal to the time from Resolution 15 of the Party Central Committee in 1959, it is impossible to forget "As if Uncle Ho were there on the day of great victory".

Synthesizing and researching information from the two books “Vietnamese Bamboo” and “The Bright Peak of Truong Son” ( National Political Publishing House - 2001 ) clearly shows the huge volume of articles by Thep Moi. In addition to his journalism work, Thep Moi also writes books, translates books, and participates in writing commentary for a number of films...

It was the Communist ideal that fueled the power of the outstanding pen of Thep Moi, such as the spirit of “How the Steel Was Tempered” (a novel by Russian writer Nicolai Ostrovsky) which he translated in 1955. This novel was the “bedside book” of most young people of the 60s generation and many decades later. The image of Pavel with the famous saying “You only live once. Live so as not to feel regret for the years you have wasted…” forever encourages a noble and meaningful way of life for us.

Highly appreciating Thep Moi's literary talent, veteran journalist Phan Quang made special comments: "Thep Moi is the most talented journalist among the Vietnamese journalists I know. He is a man of real talent and learning. A man passionately searching for new things and creating new styles. A journalist with an artistic soul"./.

THEP MOI'S REAL NAME IS HA VAN LOC , BORN ON FEBRUARY 15, 1925, DIED ON AUGUST 28, 1991, ORIGINAL IN QUANG AN COMMUNE, TAY HO, HANOI. HE TOOK THE PEN NAME THEP MOI FROM THE SUGGESTION OF TWO FAMOUS POEMS BY HO CHI MINH: "TODAY IN POETRY THERE SHOULD BE STEEL/ POETS MUST ALSO KNOW HOW TO VOLUNTEER". NEW STEEL ALSO HAS THE PEN NAMES: PHUONG KIM, HONG CHAU, ANH HONG ... HE WAS AWARDED THE SECOND CLASS INDEPENDENCE MEDAL AND MANY OTHER NOBLE AWARDS BY THE STATE. IN GRATITUDE FOR NEW STEEL'S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE COUNTRY, IN TAN BINH DISTRICT (HO CHI MINH CITY) AND LONG BIEN DISTRICT (HANOI), THERE ARE TWO STREETS NAMED NEW STEEL.
