Know how to cherish and crave life from a fall

Teacher Dang Hoang An was born in 1991 in a poor family in the countryside of Can Duoc, Long An, with a difficult childhood. Since his student days, An was aware of his responsibilities, working hard day and night to study and work to help his family. Growing up from humble beginnings, his poor childhood forged his will and motivation to rise up and firmly walk on the path of education and career. His efforts were rewarded, in 2009, Dang Hoang An passed the entrance exam to the Faculty of Psychology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education.

Wishing for a better life for their son, his parents worked hard to get him an education. In 2013, after graduating from university, he continued his studies for a master's degree. He was then retained at the school to become a lecturer in 2016.

The first successful step after the efforts has given the young teacher more motivation. However, a cruel and ironic truth happened one afternoon in late April 2016, when he fell from the upper floor of the boarding house to the ground, he suffered a serious injury due to calcium deficiency in his body. The spinal cord injury caused his legs to gradually shrink and lose their original function.

Before falling, Mr. Dang Hoang An was a university lecturer and a speaker in many psychology programs that were loved by students. Originally an extroverted and active person, Mr. An gradually withdrew because of his inferiority complex about his healthy legs suddenly becoming disabled. From a healthy person, financially independent, sharing the worries of the family suddenly became a burden, at times he fell into a state of extreme despair. However, it was the encouragement of his parents that helped him wake up, from which he again craved and knew how to cherish every breath of life.

Refusing to give in to any difficulties of the situation, young teacher Dang Hoang An strives to rise up with his own "round feet", continuing to bring positive energy to everyone. With the effort from thought to action, the wheelchair is no longer an obstacle but has become an important part of teacher An's life, a part of the difference, a personal mark.

I still remember clearly the first time I met Mr. Dang Hoang An with his bright, clear and warm eyes and gentle smile. The first thing that impressed me was not the wheelchair but the confidence and enthusiasm in the way he shared and transmitted positive energy about the will to live as if he was transmitting to me the strength from himself.

Overcoming circumstances, continuing the journey of charity

Not only starting a business growing oyster mushrooms, since 2019, teacher Dang Hoang An has also utilized his knowledge of a master's degree in psychology to accompany Vinh Long Television in psychological counseling programs such as: "Family Stories",   “School Lens”, “Accompanying Children”. In his spare time, he often writes articles for newspapers about educational issues and issues related to gender and human psychology. Many of his works have won high prizes in writing competitions such as: “Living Beautifully” (Season 4, Thanh Nien Newspaper); “The Brand I Love” (Tuoi Tre Newspaper); “Tet Thoi So” (Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper), “The Beauty of Water” (Ho Chi Minh City Women Newspaper)…

Mr. An is someone who always encourages and motivates the less fortunate that disability is not an obstacle, but just a small challenge in life”. The activities he organizes are always filled with laughter, the songs and games he comes up with are all aimed at helping people become more confident in themselves.

He always reminded me: Help does not necessarily have to be material. Sometimes just a word of encouragement, a smile can do wonders.” That is why Mr. An often participates in charity activities, helping disabled children, the elderly and families in difficult circumstances.

Ms. Huynh Thi Ton (member of the Women's Union of Hamlet 2, Long Dinh Commune, Can Duoc District, Long An Province) shared: "I admire An for her strong spirit and kind heart. Although she is in a wheelchair, An still helps many people, so whenever An needs help, I will do my best to help her."

Sitting in a wheelchair, his body weakened by illness, but Mr. Dang Hoang An's heart and spirit are still as strong as ever. He never gives up hope, never lets difficulties defeat him. On the contrary, he turns those challenges into motivation to live better every day, to continue to contribute to life in one way or another.

Teacher An established the Nhan Ai Fund to help people with disabilities, orphans, lonely elderly people, and patients in difficult circumstances. Over the years, he has mobilized donations to give 30 wheelchairs to people with disabilities, organized the Mid-Autumn Festival for children in the hamlet, visited and gave gifts to poor and near-poor households in the locality; supported milk and food for mentally ill patients at the Long An Provincial Social Protection Center.   and Da Lat; visit and give gifts to people in some neighboring provinces such as Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Dong Nai...

With the will to rise up and make efforts for the community, Dang Hoang An is honored to be one of 50 typical examples of disabled youth to be honored in the program "Shining Vietnamese Willpower" in 2022 organized by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union in coordination with a number of accompanying units.

The story of Mr. An's life has inspired many generations of students. He has been invited to share at many seminars and forums on education and disabilities for students at a number of universities, colleges and high schools such as: Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Van Lang University, Dong A University, Hoa Sen Secondary and High School...

Once, he shared with me: “When we lose something, life will give us something else. The important thing is whether we know how to appreciate and use it or not. Disability is just an inconvenience, not a misfortune, but the greatest strength to overcome all adversities lies within ourselves,” Mr. An emotionally shared.

He never complained about his fate, but always found ways to rise up and share good things with others. Every time he appeared, he brought a simple but profound message: "Knowledge is our legs". He proved that even though his legs were no longer healthy, thanks to knowledge, he could still walk, could still continue his journey and bring good things to life.

Teacher An, with his wheelchair, has proven that human limitations do not lie in the body but in the soul. Every day he rolls on his “round feet” is not only a personal journey but also a journey of sharing love, encouraging and motivating those around him. His life is a living example of determination, resilience, faith and optimism that we can all learn from. He has shown us that limitations only exist in the human mind. If we know how to overcome fear, overcome self-doubt, then nothing can stop us from achieving success.

Although he is no longer standing on the podium, teacher Dang Hoang An is still a teacher, a flame that shines forever in the hearts of many generations of students and many others in society.
