During the New Year week in Asia, Thailand welcomed nearly 880,000 visitors, with revenue 1.2 times higher than expected.

Thailand attracted a large number of international visitors during the Lunar New Year holiday, Tourism and Sports Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakitkoson said on February 13. During the seven days from February 5 to 11, nearly 880,000 visitors visited, up more than 13% from the previous week. On average, nearly 125,000 visitors entered the country each day during the Lunar New Year holiday. Previously, the government expected to welcome nearly one million international visitors during the New Year holiday (February 8-16).

The main visitors come from Southeast Asia and East Asia such as mainland China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, India and Russia.

According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), tourism revenue during Tet is estimated to reach more than 950 million USD, 1.2 times higher than initially expected and up 36% over the same period last year.

Thailand's tourism minister said international visitors are expected to continue arriving in February. Visa exemptions for visitors from China, India, Taiwan, and Kazakhstan, along with increased flight frequency, are helping the country's tourism industry. The country is also expecting a surge in visitors during the Songkran water festival. The Thai government said on February 13 that Songkran 2024 will last for five days, from April 12 to 16, to boost spending by international and domestic tourists. Previously, officials had considered extending Songkran to a month.
