Thailand: Driver arrested in bus fire on Bangkok outskirts

According to the Bangkok Post, Thai police have arrested the driver of the bus that caught fire on October 1 in the suburbs of Bangkok, killing 23 people. The victims' families have also come to Bangkok to identify their loved ones.

The fire broke out as the vehicle was en route from the Ayutthaya Historical Park in Ayutthaya province to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Learning Center in Nonthaburi province. The vehicle crashed into a barrier and caught fire.

Mr. Trairong Phiwpan, head of the Forensic Department, said 23 victims' bodies were found on the bus.

The driver of the bus was identified by police as Saman Chanput, 48. According to Thai police, he was accused of driving causing injury, failing to stop to help others and failing to report the accident.

According to Thai police, the bus driver told investigators that he was driving normally until the bus lost balance due to a problem with the front right tire and crashed into another vehicle, then crashed into a concrete road barrier, causing sparks and starting a fire.

Police are currently investigating whether the company that managed the bus complied with safety standards.

According to initial investigation, the cause of the accident may have been a blown tire, causing the car to rub against a metal barrier, causing sparks and then coming into contact with the fuel tank, causing a fire.
