Overloaded train, passengers fall onto tracks: 4 people died

(Dan Tri) - A tragic accident occurred on the morning of June 10 in the Diva area, near the city of Thane (India), killing four passengers and seriously injuring two others after falling off an overloaded train.

According to information from the Central Railway of India, the accident occurred at 9:30 am on the stretch between Diva and Kopar stations, when the train was heading towards Kasara.

Due to rush hour, the train was so crowded that many passengers stood at the doors and steps outside the train. While the train was moving, at least 10 people fell onto the tracks, killing 4. Two injured people are still being treated at local hospitals.

“This is not a collision between trains. There is a possibility that passengers standing on the steps of two trains coming in opposite directions got entangled as the gap between them was only about 1.5-2m, especially when the train went through a curve, causing the train to tilt slightly,” Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, a media representative of the Central Railway, told The New Indian Express.

“This is a frequent accident spot because there is a sharp curve where trains going in opposite directions are very close together. Because the trains are crowded, passengers stand close to the doors and stairs, making it easy to collide or fall,” said a witness.

This person also said that he had complained many times to the railway authority but there were no improvement measures.

The Railway Ministry has since made it mandatory for all new trains for the Mumbai suburban network to be fitted with automatic door closing systems to prevent passengers from standing outside the train doors or on the steps, reducing the risk of accidents. Existing trains will also be retrofitted with similar door systems.

“Passenger safety is our top priority. This incident highlights the need to strengthen safety measures to ensure that passengers do not stand outside the train doors,” said Dilip Kumar, Director of Information and Communications, Railways.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the specific cause of the accident and take remedial measures. Currently, transportation on the route is still operating normally.
