A defense official confirmed that the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Thomas Hudner shot down a drone that originated in Yemen and was headed toward the ship on November 15. Officials said the Hudner was not believed to be the intended target.

A statement from the US Department of Defense on November 15 said that while “transiting in international waters of the Red Sea, the crew of the USS Thomas Hudner engaged an unmanned aerial vehicle of Yemeni origin that was heading toward the ship.”

“The crew of the Hudner engaged and shot down the drone to ensure the safety of U.S. personnel,” the statement said. “There were no casualties or damage to the ship.” The Hudner was in the southern part of the Red Sea at the time of the engagement, an official said.

This is the second interception by a US Navy ship in the region since Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7. On October 20, the USS Carney intercepted four cruise missiles and 15 drones in nine hours. The Pentagon said the missiles were fired by Houthi forces in Yemen.

The November 15 fighting came a week after a US MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down by Houthi forces in Yemen.
