On this occasion, President Dissanayake will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an effort to improve and expand Sri Lanka's diplomatic relations with the international community.

In April 2022, Sri Lanka declared its first public debt default since gaining independence from Britain in 1948. The financial crisis forced then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to resign in 2022 amid civil unrest.

India later provided about $4 billion in aid to Sri Lanka to help it recover after it defaulted on foreign loans worth more than $51 billion.

While in opposition, Mr Dissanayake expressed reservations about some of New Delhi's projects, particularly sustainable energy projects run by the Adani Group.

During his election campaign, Mr Dissanayake pledged to scrap the projects if elected, claiming they were harmful to Sri Lanka's interests.
