Free screening for flat feet and scoliosis for students

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên26/05/2023

This is ACC's community program to support parents in early detection and treatment of musculoskeletal diseases in school-age children.

Dr Wade Brackenbury, General Manager of ACC Clinic, said that flat feet and scoliosis are two common diseases in school-age children, which can affect the long-term health of children. Over the past 17 years, ACC has regularly organized foot and spine screening for school-age children, especially preschool and primary school children, to raise awareness among parents and the community about the risks that affect children's physical development.

Recent screening data at a number of schools in major cities show that a significant proportion of school-age children suffer from these two musculoskeletal syndromes. In just the first 5 months of 2023, ACC Clinic conducted periodic screening for more than 1,000 students aged 3-10 at a number of schools in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi . Accordingly, more than 30% of students aged 6 and over have flat feet.

Early screening helps detect flat feet in children

"The golden age for screening for flat feet is when children are 2-6 years old, so for this primary school age group, it may be necessary to wear foot orthotics continuously to avoid complications caused by flat feet. However, if flat feet are detected between 3-7 years old, treatment will be easier and the child can develop the arch of the foot normally when growing up," said Dr. Wade.

Currently, treating flat feet with medical orthopedic insoles is an effective and non-surgical method.

Regarding the spine, nearly 25% of primary school-age children show signs of abnormal spinal development. This may be a result of using electronic devices, or due to children having bad posture habits and a sedentary lifestyle.

Scoliosis affects the child's posture, causing a loss of confidence. In severe cases, the disease can also negatively impact respiratory and cardiovascular function and cause chronic back pain in older people.

To get free screening, parents can call to make an appointment and bring their child to the center's 4 addresses in Da Nang , Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
