Originally from Ca Mau, at the age of 17, Mr. Viet was a guerrilla in the commune, working as a liaison officer in the mangrove forest, then transferred to work at Military Hospital 121. In 1968, Mr. Viet was injured while on duty. He was treated, recuperated and returned to his unit to work until the day the country was liberated. After that, Mr. Viet worked in the medical sector, studying at a medical university, specializing in general internal medicine.

In 1978, Mr. Viet married Ms. Thanh Thuy, a fellow countryman from a family with a rich revolutionary tradition. Mr. Viet said that in the early years of their marriage, family life faced many difficulties. Mr. Viet and his wife had no assets other than their jobs as doctors and tailors, and had to rely on relatives on both sides of the family.

In 1982, Mr. Viet's family moved to Hung Phu ward. Regardless of the difficulties, for more than 20 years, every day, Mr. Viet rode his motorbike to work at the clinic in Phung Hiep district, Hau Giang province (old). Mr. Viet wholeheartedly visited and examined patients, cared for and encouraged patients to maintain an optimistic spirit to get well soon; prioritized helping the poor and those in difficult circumstances in remote suburban areas.

After retiring, Mr. Viet opened a clinic at home to update and improve his knowledge and help those in difficult circumstances. For elderly patients and those in difficult circumstances from the countryside, Mr. Viet enthusiastically examined them, provided free medicine, and advised them on how to eat and how to treat them effectively.

Mr. Viet said: “My wife and I worked hard, saved, and gradually built a house to raise our two sons to a good education. My wife is responsible, loves her husband and children, and does not mind hardships or difficulties. Now, she continues to take care of her grandchildren who are growing up.” Being a skilled tailor, especially good at making ao dai and ao ba ba, and having a cheerful and gentle personality, Ms. Thuy has many customers. Busy teaching students, Ms. Thuy still takes care of the house, raises her children, and helps her grandchildren who come from the countryside to stay and study.

Mr. Viet shared that he was most moved and happy every time he met his old comrades on holidays and Tet, he was able to meet them, ask about their lives and health, and reminisce about the heroic past; at the same time, encourage each other to promote the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers in peacetime, work enthusiastically, contribute, and set a good example for their children and grandchildren.

Since childhood, Mr. Viet's children have been aware of independence in their studies and daily activities. When his children got married, Mr. Viet did not interfere much in their private lives, but only stayed close, talked to understand and gave advice, and guided his grandchildren when necessary. Mr. Viet said: "We always listen and grasp the thoughts and feelings of our grandchildren in daily stories. When the family gathers, I tell them about the traditions of my paternal and maternal families so that my grandchildren can understand and promote them."

With shining eyes watching his grandchildren playing, Mr. Viet confided that the joy of old age is a happy family, healthy children and grandchildren to work, study, become useful citizens, and contribute their intelligence to build and develop a strong country. Mr. Viet's wish is that his children and grandchildren will always be proud to continue and embellish the glorious tradition of the family.
