According to the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, the meeting focused on the issue of refugee repatriation and measures to ensure favorable conditions for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees from Jordan. There are currently 1.3 million Syrian refugees in Jordan.

At the meeting, the two sides also discussed humanitarian, security and political steps towards a comprehensive solution to the crisis in Syria.

In addition, Mr. Safadi also discussed with President al-Assad ways to deal with the dangers posed by cross-border drug trafficking.

During his visit to Syria, the Jordanian Foreign Minister also met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad to discuss the establishment of a joint committee to combat drug trafficking.

The Jordanian foreign minister's visit to Damascus comes at a time when Syria is being welcomed back into the regional fold, as evidenced by its re-admission to the Arab League in May, after years of isolation since the conflict broke out in Syria in 2011.
