First launched in November 2022, Subaru Rex is actually a renamed model from Toyota Raize or Daihatsu Rocky - two models that are very familiar to the Vietnamese market as well as Southeast Asia. Subaru's cooperation with Daihatsu - the unit that directly supplies Rex cars to Subaru - is enough to see that the strategy of sharing platforms between Japanese brands is becoming more and more popular in the context of electric vehicles.
In terms of design, the Subaru Rex Hybrid is identified by a distinct front grille, which bears many similarities to the Daihatsu Rocky Hybrid and Perodua Ativa Hybrid. The “Hybrid” logo appears on the body, and the instrument cluster is also specially designed to display information about the electric powertrain. In addition, the car is also equipped with a 1.5 kW AC power outlet - a valuable utility for picnics. The G Hybrid version has 16-inch alloy wheels, while the higher-end Z Hybrid has 17-inch wheels. Inside, in addition to the standard equipment and amenities, the Subaru Rex Hybrid also has red accents on the seats and dashboard. Safety equipment includes 6 airbags and a safety package with systems such as BSM (Blind Spot Monitor) and RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert).
The biggest highlight of the Subaru Rex 2025 is the e-Smart Hybrid system developed by Daihatsu. Unlike traditional hybrid powertrains, this system operates on the active EV principle: the gasoline engine does not transmit power directly to the wheels but only acts as a generator, charging the battery to operate the main electric motor. Specifically, the 1.2L three-cylinder WA-VEX gasoline engine operates on the Atkinson cycle, producing up to 80 horsepower and 105 Nm of torque. The energy generated is charged into a 4.3 Ah lithium-ion battery, which then supplies the front E1A electric motor with 105 horsepower and 170 Nm of torque, enough to operate the small SUV smoothly in the city. Thanks to this operating mechanism, the WLTC fuel consumption of Rex hybrid reaches 28 km/liter, equivalent to 3.6 liters/100 km, this is an impressive number not inferior to large displacement scooters such as Honda SH 350i.
The price of the Subaru Rex 2025 for the two new configurations, G Hybrid and Z Hybrid, ranges from 2,216,500 yen to 2,608,100 yen (equivalent to 398 - 471 million VND), respectively. In addition, the traditional gasoline versions of the Subaru Rex are still retained with a starting price of 1,910,700 yen (about 347 million VND). The appearance of Rex Hybrid not only marks an electrification step in the small SUV segment, but also shows that Japanese brand alliances are making the most of common resources to quickly adapt to consumer trends and strict emission requirements in many countries.
