As the second generation living along the Vinh Dinh River, Mr. Tran Duc Minh's family in Nai Cuu village has never felt as worried as they do now when the riverbank is only a short distance from their house. The riverbank erosion is becoming more and more serious, especially during floods.
“About 5 years ago, landslides started appearing along this riverbank. At first, there were just a few small cracks and a few landslides that flowed into the river after heavy rains, but in the past year or so, the landslides have become more frequent. The family’s screen has cracked and tilted towards the river. Recently, the family has built 2 pillars to hold it back, but because the land in front is sunken and erodes frequently, the risk of collapse is present in the near future,” Minh shared.
The current situation along the riverbank through this area has seen many large and small cracks and subsidence, trees leaning, rocks and soil sliding... many sections have been deeply eroded by water, creating frog jaws, so the landslide situation along the Vinh Dinh riverbank through Nai Cuu village will certainly continue. Therefore, Mr. Minh is very worried because his family's house could be "swallowed" by the river at any time.
Not far from Mr. Minh's house, Ms. Tran Thi Hong's family, one of the households that have lived for many years on the banks of Vinh Dinh River, is also facing the daily fear of losing their home and production land.
The landslide has not only eaten away at the farmland but is now close to the residential area, where her family has been attached to and carefully built for many years. The barn - where pigs have been raised for many years, the family's main source of income - is now tilted towards the river, cracked and at risk of collapsing. Although Hong's family has accepted to abandon the barn and stop raising pigs, her family's worries are still not gone.
“The barn is attached to the house, so we are very afraid that if the riverbank erosion continues, it will drag our entire property down to the river. Every time it rains heavily and the river water rises, the whole family is in fear and cannot sleep well at night,” Ms. Hong worried.
Minh and Hong's families are not alone, as many households living along the Vinh Dinh River section through Nai Cuu village, Trieu Thanh commune are also facing the same situation: losing their productive land and worrying about losing their homes. "In the past, we could grow potatoes and vegetables to earn extra income from the land along the river. Now the river has eaten deep into our residential land, washing away our productive land. Our assets are gradually being lost over time... We know that land near the river is weak, but having been born and raised here, we have no other choice," said Hong.
Vinh Dinh River passes through Nai Cuu village, Trieu Thanh commune, about 2 km long. In the past 5 years, due to storms and floods, it has caused landslides, seriously affecting people's lives. Currently, there are many landslides that have eaten deep into residential land and cultivated land of people with a length of about 1,000 m; nearly 60 households in Teams 4 and 5 of Nai Cuu village have been affected, of which about 10 households have been seriously affected.
Faced with this situation, households along the riverbank have planted more trees, added more soil and rocks, and reinforced structures to protect the riverbank and their property, but this solution has not been effective, and the risk of insecurity to people's lives and property is still latent.
Talking to us, Mr. Le Anh Hung, Head of Nai Cuu village said: “Previously, the distance from the river to the houses was 15 - 20 m. However, over time, the landslides and subsidence have narrowed the distance to 2 - 3 m. The landslides on the Vinh Dinh riverbank through Nai Cuu village have been very serious, complicated, and directly affected the safety of households and many constructions and houses of the people. We hope that the authorities at all levels will soon have solutions to overcome this so that people can live in peace.”
In recent years, localities have invested in building many embankments to prevent riverbank erosion and these embankments have shown remarkable effectiveness. However, the erosion of the Vinh Dinh riverbank flowing through Nai Cuu village has not been completely resolved, continuing to be a hot spot for erosion, causing serious damage to the locality in Trieu Phong district in general, in Nai Cuu village, Trieu Thanh commune in particular, making people feel insecure. Local people hope that the relevant agencies will soon intervene, have specific and long-term solutions to overcome the problem and stabilize life here.
