On June 17, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health said that after a period of increase from mid-April to the end of May, the COVID-19 epidemic began to decrease after week 22 (from May 23 to 29).
Specifically, through the infectious disease surveillance system, in week 23 (from June 5 to 11), the whole city recorded 69 COVID-19 cases, and in week 24 (from June 9 to 15), there were 32 cases (14 inpatients and 18 outpatients), a decrease of 66% compared to the number of cases in the week that reached the highest level in week 22 with 94 cases.
This is considered a positive signal, showing that the city is gradually and effectively controlling the new wave of COVID-19 after a period of increase from mid-April to late May.
"Although the number of COVID-19 cases is decreasing, the health sector must not be complacent or negligent in epidemic prevention because the risk of serious complications and death can still occur, especially in people in high-risk groups," the Department of Health emphasized.
The Department of Health said that recently, the city has recorded COVID-19-related deaths in two patients with many chronic underlying diseases.
Therefore, people are advised not to panic but also not to be subjective about the epidemic.
Compliance with the Ministry of Health 's recommendations on disease prevention and control still plays a key role in protecting public health, especially in the context that the NB.1.8.1 variant is still circulating and there is not much scientific data on its virulence and spread rate.
The City Department of Health continues to direct medical units to strengthen monitoring, early detection of COVID-19 cases and new variants, and be prepared to respond to possible situations, ensuring the admission, care and treatment of patients.
The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) is working closely with hospitals and the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) to continue conducting gene sequencing of new cases to assess the spread trend of the NB.1.8.1 variant circulating in the city, as well as the possibility of other variants appearing in the future.
Community communication activities need to continue to be promoted to raise public awareness, especially among high-risk groups such as the elderly, people with underlying diseases, and people who have not received enough doses of vaccine.
COVID-19 prevention, what should people pay attention to?
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health recommends that people take proactive measures to protect themselves, their families and the community, including:
- Wear a mask in public places, on public transport, and at medical facilities.
- Wash your hands frequently with clean water, soap or quick-acting antiseptic solution.
- Limit gathering in crowded places if not necessary.
- Increase exercise, physical training, and proper nutrition.
- Monitor your health and go to a medical facility immediately if you have a fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.
