In June, Alps was ranked as the world’s sixth most powerful supercomputer. However, at the time, the computer was not fully assembled and was operating at only 60% of its potential. The goal of developing the Alps supercomputer was to meet the demand for big data and computational science , while also making greater use of AI.

The Alps supercomputer helps train complex AI models for important applications such as medicine and climate research, said Andreas Krause, director of the AI Center at ETH Zurich. The supercomputer is housed in 33 cabinets covering an area of 116 square meters (pictured).

According to CSCS, it would take a commercial laptop 40,000 years to do what the Alps supercomputer can do in a day.
