In Arsenal's 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old Swedish striker was almost "missing". |
The 27-year-old Swedish striker was largely absent from Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, failing to take a single shot before being substituted by Mikel Arteta midway through the second half. With a £63m price tag, Gyökeres’s lack of involvement has led many to question his ability to adapt.
On the Rio Ferdinand Presents show, the former Manchester United centre-back frankly commented: “Calm down. I’ve seen him play live twice, and also the Arsenal vs Man United match. Honestly, I haven’t seen anything to prove he’s worth that huge fee. Especially when the opponent is just a Man United in turmoil.”
However, Ferdinand also left the door open for Gyökeres, saying that the striker needs more time to prove himself: “His strengths are his channel running and good physical strength. But the important thing is in the penalty area, whether he can find space and score from the combinations of Odegaard or Saka. That is the way to affirm his value.”
Not only Ferdinand, Jamie Carragher also gave a remarkable perspective. On Sky Sports , the former Liverpool defender predicted that Arteta could drop Gyökeres from the starting lineup in big matches: “To be honest, I think Arsenal will return to Havertz in important matches. Gyökeres can score goals, but Havertz is the card that Arteta will find difficult to ignore.”
With 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting CP last season, Gyökeres certainly isn't short of goalscoring ability. |
This opinion surprised Gary Neville: "There's no way Arteta would leave Gyökeres on the bench in big games", but Carragher insisted: "Absolutely possible."
Neville then suggested a compromise: “Perhaps Arteta should try both Gyökeres and Havertz at the same time. Martinelli is out of form, and that could be the solution for Arsenal’s attack,”
With 54 goals in 52 games for Sporting CP last season, Gyökeres certainly isn't short of goalscoring ability. However, the pressure of the Premier League is a different story.
From now on, all eyes will be on the Swedish striker: can he prove his £63m move was worth it, or will he become another failed move at the Emirates?
