Real Madrid proposes FIFA to hold Club World Cup every two years. |
According to the Guardian , the proposal was made by Real during their participation in the tournament in the US - where they lost 0-4 to PSG in the semi-finals. Despite their unimpressive performance on the field, "Los Blancos" accounted for 25% of the total tickets sold in the whole tournament, affirming the club's global appeal.
President Florentino Perez sees this as a strategic move to increase revenue, in the context that Real has just borrowed 1.2 billion euros to upgrade the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. Although not sure of participating in the next tournament, Real still wants the Club World Cup to take place more often.
FIFA has not yet responded to this proposal, but is considering increasing the number of participating teams from 32 to 48.
The next tournament is scheduled for 2029, but the venue has yet to be decided. Brazil and Qatar have expressed interest in hosting. Spain, Morocco and Portugal - the three hosts of the 2030 World Cup - have also been considered potential options, although Portugal has not yet expressed clear interest.
Currently, only 4 clubs have qualified: Al-Ahli (Saudi Arabia) - AFC Champions League Champion; Cruz Azul (Mexico) - Concacaf Champions Cup Champion; PSG (France) - UEFA Champions League Champion; Pyramids FC (Egypt) - CAF Champions League Champion
Notably, Chelsea - the first Club World Cup champions - are still uncertain about their place in the 2029 tournament.
The Club World Cup is entering its formative stages, with much debate surrounding its frequency and the role of European giants in restructuring the global football system.
