Normally, summer is the time when Vietnamese cinema cools down, giving way to Hollywood blockbusters and animated series. In the same period last year, in June, only two Vietnamese films were released, but both suffered heavy losses; and in July, domestic works were completely absent. However, due to the rise of horror films, summer 2025 is no longer too quiet, with many works being released regularly. Among them, Ut Lan: The ghost who keeps the property - horror project by director Tran Trong Dan - is the latest name introduced to Vietnamese audiences.
The film also marks Quoc Truong's return to the film industry. Previously, with nearly 30 projects in more than 15 years of working, the actor was considered a familiar face on the screen, especially in the television industry. However, this comeback seems to be not really complete, when Ut Lan received mixed reviews, including reviews related to the actor's performance.
The role lacks weight.
Ut Lan: The ghost who keeps the property Set in the Southwest region in the late 1990s, the film follows Lan (Phuong Thanh), a poor girl who has just lost her father and wanders to a strange land in search of a job to support herself. There, she is hired to cook for Mr. Danh (Mac Dang Khoa), a famous rich man in the area. However, entering this house directly pushes Lan into a dark plot involving the devil.
In the film, Quoc Truong plays Son - a horror writer and a distant relative of Mr. Danh's wife. Hearing that his aunt died under strange circumstances, Son traveled a long way to find clues, hoping to add more material to his story.
To be fair, Quoc Truong did not have a bad performance in this comeback project. As a curious character, eager to discover the sinister secrets behind the gloomy and quiet atmosphere of the village, the actor's performance was enough for the audience to feel a bit of fear in him; but above all, he still wanted to find the truth for himself, trying to get to the bottom of what he was wondering.
Years of acting experience help the actor avoid the dramatic, dramatic scenes often seen in recent low-budget horror films. Instead, Quoc Truong creates a certain naturalness in his dialogues.
However, that is almost all the actor can do in this project. In fact, compared to recent Vietnamese horror works, Ut Lan still creates a bit of sympathy thanks to a complete story and efforts to express it in cinematic language. However, that is still not enough to turn this into a well-prepared, powerful cinematic work, when the brainchild of Tran Trong Dan has many mistakes in the story line as well as the way of building characters.
And in such a work, Quoc Truong's performance is also affected somewhat, when his character is only added as a way to make the story more complicated and ambiguous, instead of being created with enough depth and mark.
Throughout the journey, the character Son almost never experiences any inner changes, nor is he placed in situations that are significant enough to create a psychological turning point. Quoc Truong's acting thus becomes monotonous, with the same expressions of fear and bewilderment repeated from beginning to end, making it difficult for the audience to care and sympathize.
Even in the climax, when Lan faces danger, she almost manages everything by herself. Son's appearance hardly creates any impact. Not to mention, although he is portrayed as someone who tries very hard to find the truth, in the end, Son has no contribution in discovering the nature of the ghost guarding the house, and does not promote any psychological change in the female lead. That makes the character become out of place, completely separate from the plot, despite being given a lot of screen time.
The relationship between Son and Lan at the end also becomes awkward and unconvincing, when the two have almost no interactions that are strong enough to develop feelings. The hint of love is therefore not subtle, creating a feeling of force.
Finally, Quoc Truong's performance in the film was only average, failing to make a strong impression in the scenes that required emotional depth. The actor's performance was sometimes hasty, lacking in sophistication, somewhat below par for an actor who had played dozens of large and small roles.
Quoc Truong is struggling
It is difficult to deny Quoc Truong's contributions to the film industry, when after nearly 15 years of dedication, the actor is clearly a relatively familiar name to audiences, especially those who are passionate about the small screen. The peak of his career must be mentioned as the role of Vu in Go home son (2019).
In the film, Vu is a handsome but promiscuous and womanizing guy. Although not too outstanding in terms of acting skills, Quoc Truong still shows that he is suitable for the image of a playboy, cold and indifferent on the outside, but gradually reveals some of the emotional changes inside.
Before that, the actor had a long career with a series of roles in the Southern film market. However, only when he first appeared on the Northern screen in It was only after "Come Home , My Son" that his name really exploded. The success of this role also helped Quoc Truong receive invitations to participate in subsequent film projects.
However, the big screen is a completely different story. After 5 years and 4 works, Quoc Truong seems to be still struggling to find a role that can elevate his career in the same way. Go home son He has worked in television. Most of his projects have not been highly appreciated, both in terms of content quality and the actor's performance.
For example, in Sweet Trap (2022), Quoc Truong plays Dang Minh - a controlling, patriarchal husband, which is a familiar role for him. In fact, the actor is still recognized for clearly showing the contrast between his elegant businessman appearance and the violent nature of married life. However, at the end of the film, he showed signs of running out of breath when the character's psychology changed too suddenly, not convincing enough in terms of acting.
Most recently, in Anonymous (2023) the movie in which Quoc Truong plays the villain, the actor's performance also did not leave an impression. His character is built with a refined appearance and unpredictable inner self, but the actor's performance is considered lacking in originality.
Having almost completely turned to cinema in recent years, the lack of making a clear mark has caused Quoc Truong's acting career to stagnate. More than anyone, the actor is probably the one who understands the feeling of working hard without achieving the expected results, as he has gone through a long period of acting in a series of films but his name is still obscure.
However, cinema is clearly not the same as television. And so, Quoc Truong seems to not have much time left to continue groping for a new "hit" - as it took him more than a decade to get. Go home son before.
