This is one of the new central wards of Hanoi, formed on the basis of merging the entire natural area and population of the wards: Tran Hung Dao, Hang Bai, Phan Chu Trinh (belonging to Hoan Kiem district); most of the natural area and population of Cua Nam ward (belonging to Hoan Kiem district); part of the natural area and population of the wards: Hang Bong, Hang Trong, Trang Tien (belonging to Hoan Kiem district); Pham Dinh Ho, Nguyen Du (belonging to Hai Ba Trung district).

The headquarters of the Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, Fatherland Front and socio -political organizations of Cua Nam Ward are located at 21 Ba Trieu Street. The reason for naming the new ward Cua Nam is because the ward is located near the Southeast Gate of Thang Long Citadel under the Nguyen Dynasty. Cua Nam was originally the land of Yen Trung Thuong village, Tien Nghiem commune (later changed to Vinh Xuong), old Tho Xuong district.
Accordingly, the choice of the name Cua Nam ensures that the name of the administrative unit has historical, traditional and cultural value; and ensures compliance with the principle of prioritizing the use of one of the names of the administrative units before the merger to name the new commune or ward, minimizing the impact on people and businesses due to the conversion of documents.
The ward borders Hong Ha, Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam, Ba Dinh, and Hoan Kiem wards. With an area of about 1.68 km² and a population of more than 52,000 people, Cua Nam is one of the largest wards, holding the most important political - administrative - cultural and historical center of Hanoi Capital.
Cua Nam Ward is a "summary" of the cultural, historical, religious and architectural quintessence typical of the thousand-year-old land of Thang Long - Hanoi. This place used to be a center of vibrant revolutionary activities, marking many events of special significance in the history of the formation and development of the Communist Party of Vietnam: House 5D Ham Long, where the first Communist Party cell in Hanoi was established; AVIA Factory, 90 Tho Nhuom, 25 Doan Nhu Hai, 62 Tran Quoc Toan - red addresses associated with the patriotic movement; Trung Vuong High School (26 Hang Bai), Ngo Si Lien School (27 Ham Long) - where many generations of patriotic students were nurtured, and Uncle Ho visited many times...
Cua Nam possesses a system of religious relics with ancient and diverse architecture such as: Quan Su Pagoda - the headquarters of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha; Ham Long Pagoda, Thien Quan Temple, Ham Long Church, Nam Ngu Communal House... Majestic Theater, the Far East Institute, ancient French villas on the Tran Hung Dao - Quang Trung - Phan Chu Trinh route... All of these works not only have artistic value, but are also historical and cultural relics, contributing to shaping the urban identity of Hanoi.

Cua Nam Ward is the center of the city, where many main streets are concentrated such as: Tran Hung Dao, Ly Thuong Kiet, Quang Trung, Hai Ba Trung, Nguyen Du... Many inter-provincial bus stations, administrative agencies, universities and ministry headquarters. This location gives Cua Nam a special advantage in developing service economy, logistics, culture - education, and international cooperation.
Speaking to reporters, a representative of Cua Nam ward said: “Cua Nam is a land of heritage and cultural depth, but also a place of dynamic and creative development. The ward will focus on three key areas: heritage conservation associated with tourism development; comprehensive digital transformation in urban management and administrative reform; and at the same time, developing high-quality cultural industry, trade, and services to improve people's lives.”
One of the key tasks in the 2025 - 2030 period that Cua Nam Ward focuses on implementing and investing in depth is heritage conservation and tourism development. The Ward will continue to review, classify, and restore historical, revolutionary, and religious relics; organize sightseeing and learning routes; and cooperate with travel companies to exploit the advantages of an "outdoor museum" in the heart of Hanoi.
In addition, the ward strengthens control of construction order; renovates lighting systems, water supply/drainage infrastructure, trees, signs, etc.; gradually builds a friendly, green - clean - beautiful urban space.
In particular, Cua Nam ward determined to promote the implementation of digital government, using open data platforms, online public services, and smart urban monitoring systems to improve management efficiency and serve the people.
Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh congratulated the Party Executive Committee of Cua Nam Ward.
The establishment of Cua Nam ward is not only a decision of the State, but also the desire of the people in the central area of Hanoi. Records in residential groups show the consensus and high expectations from the community. Mr. Duong Cong Tho (Ham Long street, 65 years old) shared: “I was born and raised here, and have witnessed many changes in the city. The establishment of a new ward helps to streamline the apparatus, serve people faster, and is no longer divided between small wards. I strongly support it.”
Ms. Nguyen Minh Hang, a resident of Quang Trung Street, said: “Cua Nam Ward has a lot of tourism potential. I hope the government will soon have policies to support businesses, preserve the old town facade, and promote heritage tourism routes combining cuisine and culture.”
Ms. Hang also hopes that Cua Nam ward will take the lead in building a digital government. With a high level of education and access to technology, it is necessary to soon apply comprehensive online public services to save time for both the government and the people.
The establishment of Cua Nam ward is an inevitable result of the process of modern urban development, a right step in the roadmap to build a streamlined, effective and efficient two-level local government model. Cua Nam ward is not only a place to preserve the historical and cultural values of Hanoi, but also a land that promises many opportunities for creative and sustainable development. From heritage to creativity, Cua Nam ward today carries a great mission: To become a new symbol in the heart of the thousand-year-old capital.
