Pilot sentenced to prison for trying to fly plane while drunk

Mr Russell was scheduled to fly a Delta Airlines Boeing 767 from Edinburgh to New York, but was stopped after his carry-on luggage was rejected by security. Airport security staff found two bottles of wine in Mr Russell’s luggage, one of which was open and only half full.

Mr Russell, who was wearing his pilot’s uniform at the time, admitted the alcohol was his. He later failed a breath test and a blood test showed he had 49mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood, compared to the 20mg limit for pilots in Scotland.
