Researchers at the University of Tokyo, Japan have invented a superior battery that does not contain cobalt like lithium-ion batteries, providing better performance and longevity, with various potential applications.

The new alternative to cobalt is to combine elements in the electrode, including lithium, nickel, manganese, silicon and oxygen, all of which are more common and less problematic than cobalt, says Professor Atsuo Yamada.

The new electrodes and electrolytes the team created are not only cobalt-free, but actually improve on the chemistry of current batteries. The new batteries have about 60 percent higher energy density, longer cycle life, and can deliver 4.4 volts, up from about 3.2-3.7 volts for conventional batteries.

One of the biggest surprises was the improvement in recharge characteristics. The test battery with the new chemistry was able to fully charge and discharge for more than 1,000 cycles (equivalent to 3 years of full use and charging), while losing only about 20% of its storage capacity (a 20% reduction in lifespan).
