On November 2, the Food Safety Department issued a warning about products containing banned substances that are harmful to health.

Specifically, the Food Safety Department received a report from the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang on the results of testing monitoring samples, detecting that the health food product Tigi Max Plus contained the banned substances sibutramine and phenolphthalein.

The sampled product is Tigi Max Plus (Lot: 0001; Manufacturing date: 20-1-2023; Expiry date: 19-1-2026) at Nhat Tan pharmacy (115 Tran Hung Dao, Ward 1, Tuy Hoa city, Phu Yen province).

Through testing, banned substances were detected: sibutramine: 6.67 mg/g (3.04 mg/g) and phenolphthalein: 6.89 mg/g (3.13 mg/tablet).

For the safety of consumers, while the authorities are handling the case, the Food Safety Department warns and recommends that consumers do not buy or use this product.

If this product is found circulating on the market, please notify the authorities for handling in accordance with the law.

It is known that sibutramine has the ability to reduce appetite and support weight loss, but has harmful side effects such as causing insomnia, high blood pressure and risk of cardiovascular disease.

Therefore, since 2010, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a decision to ban the circulation of all products containing sibutramine. Currently, in Vietnam, the Drug Administration ( Ministry of Health ) has stopped granting import licenses for sibutramine and recalled products containing this substance.

Meanwhile, phenolphthalein is a color indicator, often used to measure pH, banned from circulation by the FDA since 1999. This substance in weight loss foods can seriously affect the digestive system, cardiovascular system, and liver of users.
