Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on January 6 that corruption is the biggest threat to the Chinese Communist Party, and urged determination to tackle the problem.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the three-day session of the 20th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), President Xi Jinping stressed that corruption is not only still rampant but also increasing rapidly in the country. "Corruption is the biggest threat to our party," Reuters quoted Xi as saying.

Xinhua quoted President Xi Jinping as calling for a resolute victory in the difficult, long-term and comprehensive fight against corruption. Mr. Xi said that in the face of enormous challenges in the fight against corruption, the Communist Party of China remains committed to investigating and solving all corruption cases to maintain the integrity of officials.

It is imperative to conduct specific, targeted and regular political supervision, and maintain high level of unity with the Communist Party of China Central Committee in both words and deeds, Xi said.

The CCDI recently said that 58 senior Chinese officials will be investigated for corruption by 2024. Of those investigated, 47 are at the vice-ministerial level or above. From the deputy governor of the central bank to the former chairman of the country's largest oil company, corruption allegations have also been investigated, adding to public discontent.

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) is also carrying out a strong anti-corruption campaign since 2023.

Professor Andrew Wedeman at Georgia State University (USA) commented that the fight against corruption in China will continue.
