In a statement on social network X, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) Luis Almargo requested an urgent meeting of the OAS Permanent Council to find a way to resolve the diplomatic tension between two member countries, Mexico and Ecuador - one of the worst diplomatic incidents in the 76-year history of the organization headquartered in Washington, USA.
Early on April 6, Ecuadorian security forces stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas - a refugee in the embassy since December 2023 and had just been officially granted political asylum by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador a few hours ago.
Immediately after the attack, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called the break-in “a flagrant violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty .” The Mexican government announced it was severing relations with Ecuador and immediately withdrawing all diplomatic staff.
The OAS Secretary General stated that the permanent council members should meet as soon as possible after the incident. Dozens of member states have also condemned the incident and supported the call for an urgent meeting.
The Nicaraguan government strongly condemned the attack on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, considering it a blatant violation of international law and diplomatic conventions between countries around the world, and announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Meanwhile, in Ecuador, the opposition Civil Revolutionary Movement (RC) has called on President Daniel Noboa to resign for "lack of capacity to govern", after the authorities under his command carried out the above action.
