Female student of Integrated class achieved 10 points in English to graduate: "Learned from teachers"

(Dan Tri) - In this year's high school graduation exam, Nguyen Hoang Cuc, a student at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Ho Chi Minh City, was one of 141 students who achieved a perfect score in English.

Nguyen Hoang Cuc is a student studying the Integrated English program at high school level (grades 10-11) at public schools in Ho Chi Minh City.

Cuc shared that she was not too surprised with the English results in this year's high school graduation exam. After the exam, although she did not think she got a perfect score, Cuc still gave herself a pretty high score.

When working on the exam, Cuc prioritizes doing the easy questions first instead of focusing on a certain type of question. After doing the easy questions, she rereads the test and continues to work on the more difficult questions.

With difficult questions, Cuc chose to reason based on the context of the text, question, and answer, not based on grammar, to choose the appropriate answer.

Cuc did one and checked her work carefully right up to the time of submission, avoiding the rush to finish the work quickly which can easily lead to mistakes.

According to Cuc, the difficulty of this year's English exam focuses on the reading comprehension section with many rare vocabulary words that can easily cause confusion and confusion when answering. In addition, the questions have very similar answers, meaning the choices are all almost correct, only differing in a small detail...

Many education experts and English teachers point out that when the exam has a high level of difficulty approaching the international standard exam, the percentage of candidates who achieve high scores must have the ability, experience in taking international certification exams or studying programs according to international standards. Therefore, the difficulty of this year's exam requires students to have extensive knowledge and fluent English reading and comprehension skills.

Although she had an IELTS score of 7.5 and an ACT score of 28, Nguyen Hoang Cuc revealed that these were not the things that helped her the most in the English subject of the graduation exam.

Most of the skills and knowledge that helped me achieve my exam results came directly from the lectures I received from my teachers in class over the years. In addition to knowledge, it was my teachers in class who taught me how to read and recognize context effectively when doing the test.

Nguyen Hoang Cuc studied the Integrated English program from grade 6 to grade 11 and throughout her studies, she studied math and science directly with foreign teachers.

Hoang Cuc said that in class, teachers create engaging lectures, create an environment for practical English application, and learn through projects...

Foreign teachers interact a lot with students and always encourage and listen to students exchange and express their opinions. Thanks to that, Cuc has a learning environment where she can speak, listen, and communicate naturally and comfortably in the classroom without fear of making mistakes.

In addition to class hours, Cuc improves her English ability by creating a space to talk with friends and people in English; listening to English music, watching English programs and clips...

Except for the time she spent preparing for the IELTS exam, Hoang Cuc only studied English in class and did not take any extra classes. In addition to getting a perfect score in English in this year's graduation exam, Cuc also won third prize in the city-level English competition in grades 9 and 12.

“I learn and acquire English skills naturally in class, right from the teachers in class, so learning the language is not only easy and comfortable but also becomes a hobby of mine,” Cuc expressed.

Nguyen Hoang Cuc is one of tens of thousands of students in Ho Chi Minh City studying the integrated English program (according to Decision 5695 of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee). The project of teaching and learning math and science in English, jointly implemented by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training and EMG Education for over 10 years, is considered a premise for making English the second language in schools.

According to information from the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, the learning results of students participating in Project 5695 are always high, especially in math and science.

The percentage of students achieving excellent scores in periodic and final exams in English in math and science is always 85-90%. Most recently, the percentage of students taking the Pearson Edexcel international certificate exam with good and excellent results in the three subjects English - Math - Science at all levels is high, of which the high school level alone reached 96%.

This shows that the policy of expanding the integrated English program to high school is appropriate. At this important level, students have many opportunities to improve their academic knowledge, especially their English proficiency according to international standards.
