Northrop Grumman's SiAW leverages the company's weapon design, development and manufacturing expertise to meet digital priorities and enhance the operational capabilities of the U.S. Air Force's fighter aircraft.

Over the next 36 months, Northrop Grumman will continue to develop the weapon, perform platform integration, and complete a flight test program to prepare for continuous production for rapid fielding by the U.S. Air Force. This will be done at its Northridge, California facility and the missile integration plant at Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia.

“Northrop Grumman’s SiAW meets the Air Force’s need to develop and field digital-first weapons,” said Susan Bruce, vice president of Northrop Grumman’s Advanced Weapons Division. “With extensive digital expertise, this next-generation missile is a cost-effective and flexible option for the Department of Defense to acquire and modernize existing weapons.”

The SiAW is an air-to-ground weapon that provides the ability to destroy moving targets in enemy controlled environments. To adapt to changing threats, the missile is designed with an open architecture interface, allowing for continuous upgrades of subsystems to rapidly improve warfighter performance.

Phase 2 is a follow-on to the Air Force’s first large-scale Medium-Range Acquisition program with a focus on digital, Open Weapon System Architecture, and flexibility. The Air Force is aiming for initial operational capability in 2026. Phase 2 includes two components:

Phase 2.1 will conclude with a guided vehicle test launch.

Phase 2.2 will conclude with three test launches and delivery of the SiAW missile prototype.

The SiAW development is part of Northrop Grumman's advanced weapons portfolio, which includes weapons, spare parts and assemblies, missiles, electronics and interceptors that destroy or prevent threats.
