After a long period without new products, Nissan seems to have regained its form. Right after the appearance of the new generation Leaf, the Japanese car company continued to launch the third generation of its hybrid powertrain called e-Power. This powertrain was first equipped on the Nissan Qashqai small SUV in the European market. Despite looking almost identical to the facelift launched last year, this C-segment SUV has actually been completely redesigned under the hood. The self-charging e-Power system promises smoother, more powerful operation, and a range of up to 1,200 km on a single tank of fuel according to the WLTP standard.
Specifically, the Nissan Qashqai's e-Power powertrain includes a brand new 1.5L, turbocharged, 3-cylinder gasoline engine. This engine is specifically designed for the e-Power system with a major improvement in Nissan's exclusive StarC combustion technology. In addition, Nissan also optimized the intake manifold, combustion chamber and piston design to maintain strong vortex flow in the center of the cylinder. Thanks to that, the combustion process becomes more stable even when the engine operates at low rpm to generate electricity. Nissan says the improvements have increased thermal efficiency by an impressive 42%. The larger turbocharger also reduces engine revs by 200 rpm at highway speeds, helping to reduce interior noise by 5.6 decibels. Other changes include the disappearance of the complex VC-Turbo variable compression technology because it is no longer needed, reduced friction thanks to 0W-16 engine oil and extended maintenance intervals from 15,000 km to 20,000 km. True to the e-Power philosophy, the gasoline engine is not directly connected to the wheels but is only used to generate electricity for the motor.
The Nissan Qashqai's electric motor is now a 5-in-1 integrated unit, comprising the traction motor, generator, inverter, reducer and accelerator. This design significantly reduces noise and vibration under load. The electric motor output is increased by 15 horsepower, of which 14 horsepower is generated when Sport driving mode is activated. This brings the total output to 205 horsepower. Although the battery capacity remains the same at 2.1 kWh, the changes help the car save 16% more fuel in real-world conditions and reduce consumption by 14% when driving on the highway. According to the WLTP standard, the Nissan Qashqai consumes only 4.5 liters / 100 km, allowing the car to travel 1,200 km on just one tank of gas.
Nissan says the Qashqai e-Power’s longer range means it can travel longer than many traditional plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) without having to stop to charge, making it the perfect choice for those who are hesitant about electric vehicles or can’t afford to make the switch but still want the instant torque and smoothness that zero-emissions vehicles are known for. In addition to the new powertrain, the 2025 Nissan Qashqai in the European market is also upgraded with integrated Google apps, including Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Play Store. The car also has an improved ProPilot Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance system, which supports better handling in multi-lane situations and monitors surrounding traffic more effectively. According to plan, the new Nissan Qashqai 2025 will be sold in the European market next September. The selling price of this small SUV has not been announced yet.
