Blue pearl in the middle of the ocean
From Ham Tu port (Quy Nhon ward), visitors will spend more than 2 hours by wooden boat or 40 minutes by canoe to reach Cu Lao Xanh (Nhon Chau commune, Gia Lai province). Seen from the mainland, the island rises above the sea like a giant green whale. That is why the island is named Cu Lao Xanh by the locals.

The sea water here is emerald green, you can see all the way to the bottom, embracing the long stretches of smooth white sand. Different from the hustle and bustle of famous tourist destinations, Cu Lao Xanh offers a peaceful space, ideal for those who want to return to nature, escape from the hustle and bustle of life.
Few people know that Cu Lao Xanh fishing village is about 400 years old. Mr. Ho Nhat Duy, Vice Chairman of Nhon Chau Commune People's Committee, said that according to researchers, from around the 17th century, the island was a temporary shelter for fishermen who fished far from shore for long periods or anchored when encountering big waves and strong winds. By the 18th century, under the Nguyen Lord and Tay Son Dynasty, people began to move to Cu Lao Xanh to settle down.

Over hundreds of years of vicissitudes and historical changes, the village has changed its name many times. At first, it was just a fishing village, then a du, then a village. In the 19th century, this fishing village was called Thanh Chau du. In 1933, it was changed to Thanh Chau village. After the August Revolution, the village was renamed Phuoc Chau. In 1977, the island was renamed once again to Nhon Chau until now.
Currently, the island still preserves 4 royal decrees of King Bao Dai for Nam Hai mausoleum, Thuy Long temple, Thanh Hoang communal house and Ngoc Nuong Nuong temple, all of which clearly state Thanh Chau village, Tuy Phuoc district. The system of communal houses, temples and pagodas such as Thanh Hoang communal house, Ngu Hanh temple, Thanh Phuoc pagoda, Ngoc Chau pagoda... contribute to preserving the unique cultural and religious life of coastal fishermen.
