Lake Chuzenji

Lake Chuzenji is a scenic spot located within Nikko National Park (Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture).

According to legend, this lake was formed after the Nantai volcano erupted about 20,000 years ago and is the largest natural lake (about 25km in circumference, 11.62km2 in surface area), up to 163m deep and located at an altitude of 1,269m above sea level. Nikko is a top destination in the fall, when the yellow and red leaves turn brilliant, intertwining to create a picturesque scene. In the spring, visitors can freely admire the cherry blossoms in full bloom; or kayak around the lake while admiring the giant azaleas blooming in the summer.

Scattered around the lake are European-style resorts built in the 19th and 20th centuries, along with religious structures such as Futara Shrine and Chuzenji Shrine. In winter, visitors flock here to attend the Ice and Snow Festival and participate in sports such as skiing and ice skating.

Lake Shirakaba

Shirakaba is the name of an artificial lake located north of Chino City (Nagano Prefecture). It is famous for its natural scenery and beautiful hiking trails.

There is also an amusement park with many exciting games. There are many silver birch trees surrounding Lake Shirakaba, so it is also called “Silver Birch Lake”. The highlight of Lake Shirakaba is the small shrine with a red torii gate “growing” on the water.

Lake Kawaguchi (Yamanashi)

Lake Kawaguchi (Fujikawaguchiko town, Yamanashi prefecture) is the second largest lake in the Fuji Five Lakes area - five lakes surrounding the foot of Mount Fuji, a world cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO in 2013.

This is one of the best places to take pictures of the “cherry blossom tunnel” or momiji leaf forest surrounding the legendary Mount Fuji published in Japanese promotional publications.

Around the lake, there are also many interesting museums such as the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum, famous for its collection of kimonos and traditional gardens; the Kawaguchiko Art Museum, which exhibits many works depicting Mount Fuji; the Kawaguchiko Music Forest, which specializes in musical instruments and is set in a European-style garden; or the Kawaguchiko Muse Museum, which displays the works of Yuki Atae, who is famous for making plush dolls with lifelike expressions.
