The trading session on July 11 not only marked the 8th consecutive increase of VN-Index but also showed the breakthrough of a series of groups of stocks in the VN30 basket (large-cap stocks).
VN-Index stopped at 1,457.76 points, up 12.12 points from the previous session, extending the increase streak to the surprise of many investors. In just the past 3 months, the stock market has recovered in a V-shape of about 35% - going up from around 1,076 points to surpassing 1,450 points today.
VN30 group outperforms
The most surprising group of stocks in the VN30 basket, when this index increased by nearly 25 points in today's session and approached the 1,600 point mark. This is the highest mark in the history of this index, far surpassing the general market and surpassing the peak set in November 2021.
In recent sessions, cash flow has focused on large-cap stocks (pillar stocks), causing the gap between VN30 and VN-Index to widen. A series of stocks in the VN30 basket have seen explosive trading, such as VIC, VHM, SSI, HPG, MBB, VRE, etc.
Foreign money flows in strongly despite the fact that the Vietnamese stock market is at its highest level in more than 3 years with VN-Index, setting a historical peak with VN30.
Since the beginning of July alone, foreign investors have net bought more than VND10,000 billion on the HoSE. The buying power is fast and strong with a value of up to thousands of billions of VND per session.
Stocks have been booming these past few days.
SHS Securities Company commented that VN30 increased significantly, surpassing the historical high price of November 2021 around 1,587 points. The positive impact partly came from VHM and VIC stocks, when these two stocks increased strongly, heading towards the historical peak price range of 2021, corresponding to the price range of VND 90,000 for VHM and VND 120,000 - 130,000 for VIC. The market is still in an uptrend, with short-term opportunities in stocks that foreign investors actively buy.
Assessing the strong foreign capital flow into the market, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam - Director of Research and Analysis Department, Individual Client Division, Maybank Securities Company - said that there are some signs showing that the cash flow of P-Notes (a type of derivative financial instrument called an investment participation certificate of an organization) is making an important contribution to the purchasing power of foreign investors. P-Notes have the characteristics of fierce trading and often focus on large-cap, high-liquidity stocks.
VN-Index increased 35% in just the past 3 months
The strategic report of SHS Securities Company for the first half of 2025 also shows that at the current price range, the total market capitalization is about 325 billion USD, equivalent to 68% of GDP in 2024. The VN-Index is aiming for the highest price in 2021, 2022, the historical peak price range. Investors should prioritize holding according to the trend, monitor high selling pressure and consider realizing partial profits if any.
In the "ASEAN Equity Strategy" report, JP Morgan said that allowing foreign investors to not have to deposit 100% before trading in November 2024 and upgrading the new trading system KRX has helped increase the probability of Vietnam being upgraded to an emerging market by FTSE in the September 2025 review.
The upgrade could attract more than $500 million in passive capital into the market and improve investor sentiment. The organization also forecasts the VN-Index to reach 1,500 points for the base case and 1,600 points for the optimistic case by the end of this year.
