Now, many parents have changed their concept: summer is not just for resting, but an important period to help children explore the world around them and themselves through summer camp models with many diverse experiences.

Every summer, Nguyen Duc Hieu (13 years old in Hac Thanh ward) prepares his luggage to attend a summer camp course. From Tam Viet skill summer camp to military semester, Hieu has experienced everything. And this year, Hieu was registered by his parents to attend the police semester. Duc Hieu shared: “This is the third year I have attended the summer camp. Each year there is a different program and experience, so I am always excited to participate. Through the courses, I am taught communication skills, presentation skills, teamwork, independence and self-protection skills... This makes me more confident, understands my own value better, knows how to appreciate and love the people around me, especially my family”.

Summer 2025 is probably a memorable summer vacation for Nguyen Nam Phong (born in 2013 in Hac Thanh ward) when he first participated in the "military semester" program. Nam Phong said: "The days in the army gave me a lot of emotions. The first day away from home, I missed everyone and was quite worried about participating in the program. The following days, I woke up at 5 am, folded the blanket, exercised, and washed clothes. That was something I had never done at home. There were many other things I learned and did without my parents by my side."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Duc, Nam Phong's mother, said: "I registered my son for a 10-day military semester with the hope that he would experience and train in a military environment. When he returned, he excitedly told me about the lessons and stories he had experienced. Fortunately, he actively helped his mother with housework, took care of himself more, and knew how to share and unite with his friends."

Accompanying children

Currently, there are many summer camp models organized such as military semester, police semester, skill summer camp, survival summer camp, independent summer camp... Typically, the military semester is organized annually by the Thanh Hoa Provincial Youth Center in coordination with Division 341, Military Region 4. This is the only program in Thanh Hoa province that gives children the opportunity to experience a professional military environment. Children participate in learning military discipline, self-service skills, command lessons, team building and activities on the training ground. At the same time, they learn life skills, teamwork skills, first aid skills, drowning prevention and lessons about love for their homeland, country, family, friendship... Children not only practice physical training, cultivate willpower, discipline and the spirit of overcoming themselves, but also show their talents through artistic performances, expressing their emotions during the days away from home through their diaries.

Director of Thanh Hoa Provincial Youth Center Nguyen Anh Tuan said: “From 2014 to now, the program has been organized by the center and has always received the attention and support of many parents in the province. In 2025, the center coordinated with Regiments 266 and 270, Division 341 to organize 2 sessions with more than 500 "soldiers" participating. In addition to the military semester program, the center also organizes a summer camp on skills - professional team work for the command board, the source of the team command board. Children participating in the summer camp learn about the history of the team, the regulations and the main tasks of the team command board; equipped with the basic contents of team rituals and other skills. Through the activities at the summer camp, children develop their thinking, practice skills,and are educated in love for their homeland, family, school, and friends".

There are also summer skill camps of Thanh Hoa City Children's Cultural House, Thanh Hoa Tam Viet Skills Training Center... Each summer camp not only brings interesting and useful experiences to children, but is also a journey to help children grow up and become more responsible.

In the modern world , where soft skills and personal abilities are highly valued, what children learn from summer camps is the foundation for long-term development. However, in the context of more and more summer camp models emerging, parents need to pay special attention to the safety factor when choosing a program for their children to participate in. First of all, priority should be given to summer camps run by organizations with clear legal entities, operating licenses, and a team of managers, coaches, and coordinators who are well-trained, experienced, and dedicated to children. At the same time, it is necessary to learn about the program and content of the summer camp model, choose a model that is suitable for children, and always put the safety, health, and spirit of children first, so that summer is truly a time of rewarding experiences.
