The bedroom is just a place to sleep, but many people have the habit of "cooking porridge" with their phones and watching movies, causing the brain to practice other habits that make it difficult to fall asleep.

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Khac Bao, deputy head of the respiratory department of Gia Dinh People's Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said this at a workshop and discussion on the content "Current status of sleep disorders, causes, consequences, prevention" organized by Tien Phong newspaper on March 5 in Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Associate Professor Bao, there are many causes of insomnia such as sleep hygiene, living habits, poor diet, etc. Of which, sleep hygiene is the most important. The bedroom is only a place to sleep, so there should only be a bed, no TV, desk, etc.

Associate Professor Bao emphasized that living habits such as going to the gym late at night, doing mental work, smoking, drinking alcohol or using stimulants before going to bed... all disrupt sleep.

In addition, sleep disorders also have other causes such as genetics, old age, internal medicine, medication, and excessive stress and anxiety.

Sleep disorders seriously affect intelligence, causing decreased attention, slow judgment, hallucinations, hyperactivity, decreased attention, and immunodeficiency, making the body susceptible to infectious diseases, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer.

Children with insomnia will lead to slow growth, hypothermia, and increased risk of obesity.

Associate Professor Bao also said that preventing and treating sleep disorders is to adhere to sleep hygiene, sleep on time, wake up on time, practice a lifestyle of not smoking, not using stimulants, avoid drinking alcohol and coffee in the late afternoon and evening; build a good sleeping environment including light, sound, scent, bedding, temperature, ventilation; eat a nutritious diet, avoid eating too much in the evening.

Associate Professor Khac Bao emphasized: "Sleep disorders are common but often overlooked."

Sleep disorder is a disease. When there are symptoms of insomnia, daytime sleepiness, and incidents during sleep. Specifically, patients with insomnia for more than 3 months; significantly affecting the quality of life such as not concentrating on studying; affecting people around such as snoring loudly, causing injuries to people sleeping with them... all need to see a doctor immediately, Associate Professor Bao recommends.

Many children and adults use technological devices before going to bed.

Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Thu, head of the sleep medicine unit at People's Hospital 115 in Ho Chi Minh City, said that some statistics show that 75% of children and 70% of adults use technological devices before going to bed, affecting sleep quality.

When using technology devices, users not only play with them but also watch movies, text messages, etc., making it impossible for the brain to be quiet, causing difficulty sleeping. Moreover, sound and blue light disrupt biological rhythms, affecting other hormones in the body.

Dr. Thu also believes that using technology before going to bed also contributes to increasing the risk of work accidents, traffic accidents as well as reducing productivity the next day, reducing relationships from family to society.

"I have seen cases where using technology before going to bed affects marriage" - Dr. Phuong Thu warned.
