Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has lifted a two-year-old moratorium on operations at Tokyo Electric Power Company's (TEPCO) Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant, paving the way for a process toward restarting the facility.

Japan to restart world's largest nuclear power plant

With a capacity of 8,212 megawatts (MW), the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Plant, located in Niigata Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, has been offline since around 2011, when the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster shut down all nuclear power plants in Japan at the time. In 2021, the NRA banned TEPCO from restarting the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Plant after finding serious safety flaws.

TEPCO hopes to restart the world's largest nuclear power plant soon to cut operating costs. However, the resumption of operations at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Plant still requires approval from the Niigata Prefecture government.
