Faced with the ever-increasing global temperature and the marked increase in electricity consumption in many countries, Japanese energy companies and authorities have chosen geothermal as a strategic direction in the field of renewable energy.

Instead of just exploiting heat sources in areas with traditional hot springs, Japan is now promoting the development of enhanced geothermal technology (EGS), which allows deep exploitation in areas without hot springs.

Lianhe Zaobao (Singapore) on June 7 quoted the latest report of the Japanese Ministry of Economy , Trade and Tourism (METI) saying that the country's EGS technology is approaching the commercialization stage, with the cost of producing electricity per kWh currently ranging from 16.1 - 16.8 yen - almost equivalent to the cost of generating electricity by wind (16.3 yen/kWh).

The highlight of geothermal compared to other renewable sources such as solar or wind power is the ability to operate continuously, regardless of weather conditions. In addition, the lifespan of geothermal equipment is also highly appreciated, promising to bring more sustainable investment performance.

Japan currently ranks third in the world in geothermal reserves, after the United States and Indonesia. The Japan Energy and Natural Resources Commission believes that EGS technology can significantly shorten the time for geological surveys, thereby speeding up the commercialization process.

A well with a diameter of only 20cm can produce an output of 25,000 - 40,000 kW, about 10 times higher than the normal capacity of traditional geothermal.

According to a June 2 report by the Japanese economic newspaper Nikkei , Japanese businesses, including large enterprises such as Mitsubishi Corporation, are actively participating in international cooperation to develop this project.

The Mitsubishi-backed Quaids Company in the US will put into operation the first new generation geothermal power plant and start selling electricity to the market. Unlike traditional drilling methods, this project will use millimeter wave drilling technology to crack and process underground rock at depths of 3,000 - 20,000m.

Not only targeting domestic deployment, Japan also targets the Asian market - where energy demand is increasing rapidly and geothermal potential has not been fully exploited.

The Japan Energy and Resources Commission predicts that thanks to new technology that shortens geological survey time, the possibility of commercializing EGS will increase, opening up great opportunities for Japanese businesses.
