Pre-match review
Benfica came into this game on the back of a 6-0 thrashing of Auckland City, although they had to wait until injury time to open the scoring in the first half. In the second half, they were wide open, creating clear-cut chances and not allowing a single shot in the box.
The Portuguese side currently have four points after two games. A draw against Bayern Munich, who have six points and have already qualified for the next round, would see Benfica through to the group stage.
Under coach Bruno Lage, Benfica made their first appearance in the FIFA Club World Cup, a historic milestone for a club that has twice participated in the Intercontinental Cup (the predecessor to the FIFA Club World Cup). In the 2024/25 season, they finished second in the Primeira Liga with 80 points, repeating the previous season's achievement.
However, their recent form has not been really convincing. The victory over Auckland was the first time the “Eagles” had triumphed after 5 matches (3 draws, 1 loss).
However, the attack is still a solid support when Benfica has scored in 17 consecutive matches, including 13 matches with 2 goals or more.
On the opposite side, Bayern Munich entered the match comfortably after defeating Boca Juniors 2-1, thereby quickly winning a ticket to the next round with 6 absolute points after two matches.
This victory also helped them become the first team in the last 10 matches to defeat a South American representative in this tournament.
Under coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern showed a more pragmatic style of play when they only had 11 shots (4 on target) against Boca, significantly lower than the average of last season's Bundesliga.
However, the effectiveness is still guaranteed, especially when the Bavarian team's attack is in form with 5 out of the last 9 matches scoring 3 goals or more. Kompany is also on a 9-match unbeaten streak with 6 wins and 3 draws.
Form, head-to-head history
Head-to-head history is in Bayern's favor as they are unbeaten in their last 7 encounters with Benfica (6 wins, 1 draw), scoring a total of 20 goals.
Even though they have qualified, the Gray Tigers will certainly still aim to keep their top spot in the group, which will help them face an easier opponent in the round of 16.
Force information
Benfica are without Araujo and Bah Alvaro through injury, while Carreras and Belotti are suspended.
On Bayern Munich's side, the Gray Tigers will be without veteran Thomas Muller, who is currently recovering from an injury.
