Musician Nguyen Van Chung tells for the first time about his journey as a single father, the torment of his child asking: "Why don't you live with me?" and the pain that has never subsided from losing his mother.
Author of 5 billion views and childhood continues to write with children
Song Continue the story of peace composed by him in 2023 became a musical phenomenon, especially on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and national reunification. To date, this song has reached about 5 billion views on social networking platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Facebook.
Along with hits for adults, Nguyen Van Chung is also a musician with more than 300 compositions for children. What’s special is that his biggest inspiration is… being a father.
Before becoming a father, Nguyen Van Chung tried writing children's songs but felt that the melodies lacked vitality and did not touch his emotions. Only when he had children and experienced every moment of daily life with them did he find true inspiration. It was the love and attachment to his children that helped him write music with the feelings of a father - sincere, close and full of emotion.
Nguyen Van Chung is raising a son and a child who is his sister's child. When his sister is busy working abroad, he takes the child home to care for like his own child.
Having gone through an unfulfilled marriage, Nguyen Van Chung had to put his work aside for a while to wholeheartedly take care of his child. He was willing to be both father and mother, taking care of the finances , cooking, taking his child to and from school, and coaxing him. Everything was just so that his child could have a peaceful home, without having to fear anything.
However, the feeling of guilt for not being able to give his child a complete family was always present. One time, his son did not ask his father but turned to his teacher and asked: " Why don't you live with your mother?" That question was like a sharp cut in his heart. Luckily, the teacher answered with a subtle example, helping his son understand and feel relieved.
Nguyen Van Chung teaches his son how to care for his mother who lives far away - sending letters, texting, not blaming. He also determined that in everything - from work to love - his son will always be his number 1 priority, until he turns 18. After that, if the time comes, he will be ready to open his heart, but for now, he chooses to be alone so that his son can have the necessary stability.
Don't dare to sing again the song I composed
Nguyen Van Chung also has a place to return to when he is exhausted: his family. His father used to work as a sound engineer, supporting him from the early days of performing. His mother doesn't talk much but always quietly watches over him, giving him advice whenever he gets lost.
“My mother once told me: ‘Write something valuable, if you keep writing sad songs, you will be sad too’,” he said. From that saying, he started to compose more for children – a place to sow hope, love and positivity.
Among his compositions, Mother's Diary is the song that moved Nguyen Van Chung the most – to the point that he did not dare sing it again after his mother passed away. “ I even blamed myself for writing such an evil song. Every word made me feel remorseful,” he said.
The explanation for the controversial lyrics “I just wish there was someone who loved me more than I did” is not an affirmation, but something deep in the hearts of mothers. They know they cannot be with their children forever, so they just wish there was someone tolerant enough to love their children completely instead of their mother.
Before the song was released, he let his mother listen to it first. She didn't say anything, just silently listened to it every night - the way she silently supported her son all his life.
After his mother passed away, he could no longer find fried rice or pancakes like her cooking. “It’s not because other people’s cooking was bad. But when my mother passed away, I also lost the delicious taste in my memory,” he confided.
Nguyen Van Chung admitted that he had never told his father, "I love you, Dad," but he was very touched every time his son said that to him. He hoped that one day soon, he would be brave enough to say that to his father, the way he had taught his son to always love and express himself.
