- The rainy and stormy season often brings potential risks to agricultural production. Heavy rains, strong winds, flooding... can cause farmers' efforts to "go down the drain". Therefore, the industry and people have been implementing prevention and control solutions.
In 2024, the whole province suffered heavy damage due to floods. Specifically, over 3,144 hectares of rice, more than 2,323 hectares of vegetables, over 678 hectares of fruit trees, 27,180 hectares of forestry trees... In fact, in the context of increasingly extreme climate, people are forced to change their production mindset and strengthen technical measures to mitigate damage when storms occur.
In early May, when the rainy season began, many households in Hoang Viet commune, Van Lang district were busy clearing weeds and erecting support poles for the rose bushes. Mr. Nguyen Dinh Bao, Na Phai village, Hoang Viet commune said: My family has about 400 rose bushes, which are also the main source of income for the family. In 2024, heavy rain and storms broke many of my family's rose branches. Therefore, to limit damage, from the beginning of May 2025, I proactively cleared the garden, pruned the branches to make the trees airy and used bamboo to make support poles to avoid breaking during heavy rain and strong winds. Hopefully this year there will be no more damage.
Not only Mr. Bao's household, many other families in the district have also begun to implement measures to protect crops such as: digging drainage ditches for crops, using stakes to support fruit trees... According to data from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Van Lang district, in nearly the first 6 months of 2025, the whole district planted over 2,230 hectares, of which rice reached over 1,150 hectares, corn over 747 hectares... In addition, the whole district has more than 1,300 hectares of rose apples, a key crop that brings high economic efficiency to farmers.
Ms. Lo Thi Kim Oanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Van Lang district, said: Due to the impact of natural disasters in 2024, the agricultural sector in the district was greatly affected. Specifically, the whole district has over 385 hectares of rice, crops, and 48,164 hectares of fruit trees affected and damaged. Given that reality as well as the erratic weather developments, in early May 2025, we advised the District People's Committee to issue a plan for natural disaster prevention and search and rescue in the district, in which, measures to respond to each type of natural disaster, each level to protect people's lives and property. At the same time, the District People's Committee advised the People's Committees to direct the People's Committees of communes to closely follow weather forecasts to promptly propagate to people to proactively take preventive and avoidance measures, including measures to protect crops. In addition, we also coordinate with relevant units and People's Committees of communes and towns to inspect, repair, and reinforce irrigation canal systems, dredge canals to clear the flow, and limit flooding when heavy rain occurs.
Along with Van Lang, districts and cities have also been actively directing the People's Committees of communes and towns to actively propagate and guide farmers to implement measures to protect crops during the rainy and stormy season. According to statistics from professional agencies, in the spring of 2025, people in the province planted over 45,900 hectares, of which 15,203 hectares of rice and 13,736 hectares of corn...
Ms. Tran Thi Nhi, Hoa Binh commune, Van Quan district said: My family has more than 3 sao of rice. In 2024, there was a big storm that flooded and damaged half of the rice area. Learning from that storm, from the beginning of May this year, based on the weather forecast of the professional agency and the guidance of the People's Committee of the commune and district, my family proactively dredged the canals and streams to limit flooding.
In addition to the initiative of districts, cities as well as people, specialized departments have implemented measures to protect crops. Mr. Nguyen Huu Chien, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: For agricultural production, natural disasters have a great impact, so in order to respond to natural disasters and protect crops, the department has also made recommendations and requested the People's Committees of districts and cities to propagate and guide the people. In particular, focusing on adjusting the planting schedule, proactively monitoring weather developments, promptly harvesting rice and crops with the motto "green at home is better than old in the field"; for forestry and fruit trees, we also recommend that people take early remedial measures if affected by storms such as tying and supporting to create conditions for crops to grow. At the same time, the department also directed specialized departments to coordinate with related units to inspect the system of canals, lakes, dams, review areas at risk of flooding, and have effective drainage measures.
Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but they can be proactively limited. With the active and joint efforts of the people, the government and professional agencies, it is hoped that risks in agricultural production will be minimized, and people's livelihoods will be maintained, especially in the context of increasingly unpredictable natural disasters like today.
