Verifying the case of a highland resident who was 'ripped off' by nearly 5 million VND when taking his child to the doctor

Hanoi police have investigated the case of a highland aunt and niece who were accused of being overcharged by a motorbike taxi and taxi driver for 4.9 million VND when they took a bus from My Dinh bus station to return to their hometown.

My Dinh 2 Ward Police (Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi ) are verifying the case of a highland ethnic family being "ripped off" 4.9 million VND in taxi and motorbike taxi fares for a distance of about 22km.

Previously, social media account XT posted about the incident that happened at around 3:30 p.m. on June 13. At that time, Mr. T. was on his way from Hanoi to his hometown. When he reached the turnoff to Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway, he encountered two people (one male, one female) carrying sacks walking in the hot sun.

Thinking they were from the highlands, Mr. T. stopped the car to ask them and learned that they were trying to get to Lao Cai, so he gave them a ride. As soon as he got in the car, the woman answered the phone and suddenly burst into tears.

After encouragement and questioning, Mr. T. found out that the two people hitchhiking were related, an aunt and niece.

The aunt took her child to the National Children's Hospital for treatment. On the way back, the aunt and her niece took a motorbike taxi via an app to My Dinh bus station and then caught a bus back to Lao Cai.

However, when they arrived at My Dinh bus station, a motorbike taxi driver approached them and asked where they were going. After knowing that the aunt and niece wanted to take a bus back to Lao Cai, the motorbike taxi driver immediately said that the bus had just left the station and offered to take them after him.

They accepted, each got on a motorbike taxi and chased the bus. After traveling a short distance, the driver told them that the bus was waiting at km23 of the highway, so they had to transfer to a shuttle bus to get there. The fare for the motorbike taxi was 700,000 VND.

The two were then transferred to a taxi and taken to the entrance of the Noi Bai - Lao Cai highway. The driver then asked them to get out of the car and said the fare was 4.2 million VND. Because he had no cash, the young man (the nephew) called his hometown and asked his family to transfer the money.

The victim could not remember the taxi driver's license plate number, but they still had the information from the transfer QR code.
