14 million USD for World Cup 2026 TV copyright: Which station in Vietnam can afford it?

Recently, the commercial partner of the World Football Federation (FIFA) has put up for sale the 2026 World Cup television copyright package in Vietnam at a very expensive price: 14 million USD (excluding tax). No media unit in Vietnam has yet negotiated to own this copyright package.

AUDIENCE IS AT RISK OF "HUNGER FOR WAVES"

One year from now, the 2026 World Cup finals - the most anticipated football tournament on the planet - will officially kick off in three countries: the US, Canada and Mexico. As usual, the 2026 World Cup television rights packages in regions, countries and territories are offered early, about 12 months before the official event takes place. Thanh Nien 's source said that the rights package in Vietnam was offered by the partner for 14 million USD (about more than 365 billion VND). This is the selling price excluding tax and other technical fees. If the package is complete, the price could be up to 15 million USD. With such an expensive rights price, Vietnamese fans are at risk of not being able to watch this tournament on television channels as well as other platforms in Vietnam.

According to a copyright expert, the high copyright price is explained by the increasing attraction of the World Cup, as well as the expansion of the number of participating teams from 32 to 48, which means the number of matches has increased significantly. However, in the context of many economic difficulties, limited financial resources and advertising pressure that is no longer as "easy" as before, Vietnamese TV stations and some media units are facing a very difficult economic problem.

"The World Cup is spiritual food for Vietnamese audiences, but television units cannot buy it at all costs. No station has yet intended to buy the copyright for the 2026 World Cup because the price is too expensive and the stations will have to balance the commercial balance with the role of serving the community. Hopefully in the near future, a reasonable solution will be found, so that Vietnamese people do not miss the biggest football festival on the planet," said the expert.

World Cup TV rights are too expensive, need ALLIANCE and COST SHARING

Although there is a precedent that Vietnam has just finalized a copyright contract close to the opening day of the World Cup like the 2018 World Cup, the prospect of having a media unit with enough financial potential to "shoulder" the entire figure of hundreds of billions of VND is quite fragile. Domestic television stations are currently hesitant, or are only willing to participate in the role of an alliance, sharing costs. In the current context, the model of an alliance of television stations or businesses sharing the cost of purchasing copyrights would be a possible direction. However, there needs to be a unit that takes the lead, is responsible for negotiating and redistributing content. In addition, the State should also consider having policies to support and encourage large enterprises to join together for the benefit of the community, similar to sponsorship deals with high social significance.
