Hoa Binh City is located along the Da River - the largest river in the Northwest of Vietnam, flowing through the city center.
Hoa Binh City has an area of 348.65 km2, including 12 wards and 7 communes (expected to have 4 wards and 1 commune after rearrangement), recognized as a type II urban area in January 2025. By the end of 2023, the total urban population of the city is about 177,000 people, the proportion of the inner-city population accounts for about 83.6%.
Hoa Binh artificial lake, the green pearl of the Northwest, plays a very important role. Interspersed in the lake are hundreds of large and small islands, including limestone islands and earth islands.
The lake stretches 230km from Hoa Binh to Son La with a capacity of about 9.45 billion m3, and a surface area of about 8,900 hectares. The lake section through Hoa Binh is within the administrative boundaries of Hoa Binh city and 4 districts: Da Bac, Cao Phong, Tan Lac, and Mai Chau.
Since 2014, the Provincial Party Standing Committee issued a resolution on developing fish cage farming in the Hoa Binh hydroelectric reservoir area, period 2014-2020.
In 2015, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision to concretize the resolution, providing policies to support and encourage the development of cage fish farming in the Hoa Binh hydroelectric reservoir area in the period of 2015-2020.
Thanks to that, in the period 2015-2022, fish cage farming in Hoa Binh reservoir developed rapidly, with the average fish cage rate increasing by nearly 14%/year. The average fish output increased by approximately 40%/year, including species such as catfish, spotted catfish, red tilapia, black carp, silver carp, sturgeon, grass carp, tilapia...
By 2024, the number of fish cages on the lake will be nearly 5,000, with an estimated output of 10,000 tons and an estimated economic value of 600 billion VND; the average income for a 50m3 cage will be about 50-70 million VND/year; creating jobs and stable income for nearly 2,000 local workers.
Not only households living along the lake, but also many individuals and organizations inside and outside the province have participated in cage fish farming. On Hoa Binh Lake, there are 35 enterprises, cooperatives, cooperative groups, and family farms investing in intensive farming on a large scale; 2 enterprises have invested in raising more than 200 cages using advanced technology.
Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant plays an important role in regulating flood control for the Northern Delta region and contributing to ensuring electricity supply for the country's socio-economic development.
Since its completion in 1994, with 8 units with a total installed capacity of 1,920 MW, Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant has contributed to basically solving the power shortage in our country for a long time. The electricity output always exceeds the design and maintains the level of 9-10 billion kWh/year.
Going deep into the city center to the corner of An Duong Vuong - Tran Hung Dao intersection in Phuong Lam ward is where many agencies are located such as the Provincial Party Committee Office, Provincial People's Committee, People's Committee Office, Public Administration Center...
Located in Quynh Lam ward is Hoa Binh Square, which was put into use in 2016, located in the Quynh Lam multifunctional area. The project has an area of 14.5 hectares, with a total investment of about 244 billion VND, designed as a park space imbued with the cultural identity of the ethnic people in Hoa Binh province.
The square is surrounded by a lake, with a fountain and a system of trees, ornamental plants, and green grass. This is a project of great significance, contributing to the beauty of Hoa Binh city, while helping the city's residents have a clean, green living space.
Hoa Binh City Youth Park is located in Phuong Lam ward, is a theme park for entertainment with green spaces, water surfaces combined with entertainment, learning, relaxation activities for children, and services for the people.
According to the adjusted planning content, the project has an area of 8.23 hectares, of which the landscape design area accounts for 5 hectares, water surface 3.23 hectares, landscape green area 8,930m2, walking path and playground area 10,139m2, shade green area, entertainment services 27,666m2.

According to the Project on rearranging the provinces of Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, and Hoa Binh, Phu Tho province will be established - a provincial-level administrative unit directly under the Central Government on the basis of merging the entire natural area, population size, and commune-level administrative unit system of the two provinces of Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh into the administrative boundaries of Phu Tho province.
After the merger, Phu Tho province has a natural area of 9,361.381 km2; population of 4,022,611 people; expected to have 148 commune-level administrative units (133 communes and 15 wards).
