Abundant supply, diverse types

At this time, many types of fruit from gardens in the Mekong Delta and many regions across the country have entered the harvest season. The fruit supply has also increased because farmers in many places have increased their planting areas in recent times, while this year the export output of many types of fruit is somewhat difficult and slow compared to previous years. Therefore, the supply of fruit in the domestic market is very abundant and diverse in types and prices.

Fruits are sold at a supermarket in Can Tho city.

At markets, supermarkets and fruit selling points in Can Tho City, there are currently many types of delicious fruits, specialties of the Mekong Delta region, especially fruits that are entering the main harvest season such as mango, strawberry, durian, plum, rambutan, mangosteen, longan, longan, jackfruit... Gardeners in the city and provinces in the Mekong Delta are focusing on harvesting and bringing to the market many types of fruit trees that bear fruit all year round, as well as being processed by farmers to produce fruit in different seasons as desired such as grapefruit, orange, tangerine, Ido longan, longan, dragon fruit, guava, Thai jackfruit, custard apple, watermelon, melon, papaya, banana... Many types originating from other regions in the country have also been brought to market by units, enterprises, business contacts and small traders in abundance at markets, supermarkets and fruit selling points in Can Tho City. The most concentrated are lychees and plums from the provinces and cities in the North, avocados, grapes and apples from the provinces and cities in the Southeast and Central Highlands. In addition, the city also sells many types of imported fruits such as mangosteens and Thai longans, pomelos, grapes, pears, kiwis, cherries, oranges, tangerines... imported from many countries in Asia, Europe, America and Australia. Ms. Do Thi Thu Ha, owner of a fruit shop on Nguyen Van Cu Street, Ninh Kieu District, said: "At this time, consumers have many opportunities to choose from when consuming fruit because many types of delicious, domestic specialties are in the main harvest season, the amount of fruit sold at markets and fruit selling points is very abundant. Besides, there are also many types of imported fruits on the market. However, many consumers tend to choose to buy domestic fruits because they are fresh and delicious and have affordable prices." According to Ms. Phan Nguyen Bich Phuong, a fruit vendor at Xuan Khanh market, Ninh Kieu district, the fruits sold on the market are not only diverse in types but the prices of many types of fruits have also decreased sharply compared to the beginning of the year and compared to last year, creating favorable conditions for consumers to buy and enjoy many types of delicious fruits.

Price reduction

The prices of many types of fruit such as durian, jackfruit, mangosteen, tangerine, mango, custard apple, soursop, grapes, avocado, watermelon, plum, guava... have decreased by at least 2,000-20,000 VND/kg compared to a month ago, and are at the lowest level in many months; in particular, many types of durian have decreased by up to 50% compared to last year. At many markets and fruit shops in Can Tho City, Ri6 durian type 1 is sold at 50,000-60,000 VND/kg, while types 2 and 3 are only 30,000-45,000 VND/kg. Mon Thon and Musaking durians have higher prices, with the beautiful durian at 90,000-120,000 VND/kg. Mangosteen is sold at many markets and fruit stores at 50,000-70,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. Lychee and rambutan are at 30,000-50,000 VND/kg. Cat Chu and Cat Hoa Loc mangoes are priced at 20,000-45,000 VND/kg, while elephant mango, green-skinned Taiwanese mango and pomelo mango are only at 5,000-10,000 VND/kg. The prices of oranges, green strawberries, bonbon strawberries and Siamese strawberries are also very low, at only 3,000-15,000 VND/kg. Papaya, bananas and watermelons are retailed at many markets at 7,000-10,000 VND/kg, guava is 8,000-20,000 VND/kg. The price of 5 Roi grapefruit is 13,000-18,000 VND/kg, the price of avocado, plum, Northern plum, dragon fruit, tangerine and green-skin grapefruit is 20,000-35,000 VND/kg, depending on the type. The price of tangerine and custard apple is 35,000-40,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, the price of many types of imported oranges, tangerines, pomelos, pears and grapes sold at retail in many markets is also quite cheap, with only 30,000-40,000 VND/kg.

The prices of many fruits have decreased and are at a low level due to increased supply because the growing area has increased recently and many fruits are entering the peak harvest season. In addition, the market also has competition from many domestic fruits and cheap imported fruits. Recently, the export output of many fruits has also encountered difficulties and is slower than before, leading to a sharp increase in the amount of fruit supplied to the domestic market, affecting the reduction of selling prices, especially when many fruits are mainly consumed in fresh form, which cannot be preserved for a long time. In fact, last year when durian was exported smoothly, the amount of durian sold in the domestic market was quite small and the selling price was very high. However, this year durian is sold a lot in markets, supermarkets and fruit stores, at very low prices. The reason for the increase in supply and the sharp decrease in durian exports compared to the same period last year, especially when the Chinese market tightened management of durian imports and strictly controlled the residue of amber and cadmium in durian. According to many businesses and fruit traders, recently the export output of many other fruits such as jackfruit, mango, grapefruit, etc. has also been quite slow due to many reasons, including changes in consumer demand, many countries reducing imports, consumers reducing spending in the context of the general economic difficulties. On the other hand, fruit importing countries are also increasingly demanding on product standards and quality and have policies to reduce imports to protect domestic production.

With abundant supply and much competition, the prices of many fruits are likely to decrease due to increased supply. This is a good sign for consumers to conveniently buy and use fruits. However, the fact that many fruits are falling sharply in price is a concern for fruit growers. Therefore, the relevant authorities also need to pay attention to stabilizing product output for farmers. Pay attention to promoting processing, preservation, export development, connecting supply and demand, promoting products, helping farmers consume in a timely manner, at appropriate prices and reducing intermediaries so that consumers can also benefit. Currently, there is a situation where many types of fruits are sold by farmers at very low prices, but when they reach consumers, they are 2-3 times higher due to going through many intermediaries.
