Disabled woman devoted to the poor

"From the bottom of my heart, I want to share and help many people in difficult circumstances in the locality, not only to make them happy but also to make my life more meaningful," Ms. Le Thi Tinh (52 years old, Phu Long 1 village, Van Tuong commune, Quang Ngai province) shared about her 7-year journey of tirelessly helping the poor.

The woman has a thin figure. Since childhood, she has been disabled, one leg is atrophied so walking is a bit difficult, but she always has a kind heart and shares with the poor.

In 2019, amid the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic, she was entrusted with the task of Head of the Women's Association of Phu Long 1 Village (Van Tuong Commune, Quang Ngai Province). Without salary or allowance, she still took on the responsibility with all her heart. She called on people in the village to donate rice, vegetables, and necessities to send to Ho Chi Minh City to support people in the epidemic area, and participated in cooking each meal to send to quarantine areas.

Thoughtful and hard-working, Ms. Tinh always cares about the common things that she feels need to be done. Ms. Ngo Thi Kinh (62 years old, Phu Long 1 village) has a mental illness. Since 2019, Ms. Kinh's health has declined and she has been unable to work in the fields. More than one sao of rice field, her only source of livelihood, is at risk of being abandoned. Sympathizing with Ms. Kinh, Ms. Tinh has mobilized her sisters to participate in planting, caring for, harvesting, milling... to ensure that each crop produces enough rice for Ms. Kinh to live on.

“Giving her rice is only enough to eat for a while, but if we help her farm, we will have rice to eat all year round, year after year,” Ms. Tinh confided. Seeing Ms. Tinh’s work, some people lent cutting machines, others helped mill rice, all for free, because everyone wanted to contribute a small part to the great cause that Ms. Tinh had initiated.

From 2019 until now, every rice crop has yielded 7 bags of rice per sao. Only in years of poor harvests does Ms. Tinh collect rice from the village to send to Ms. Kinh, 10kg/month.

Every time Mrs. Tinh came over, Mrs. Kinh beamed like a child meeting a relative. Although her memory was not intact due to illness, Mrs. Kinh had never forgotten her affection. She held Mrs. Tinh's hand tightly, pulled her to sit down, and chatted happily as if she had met a close friend after a long time. "I was so happy, thanks to Mrs. Tinh, my house always had a full jar of rice. She often gave me candy, fruit... I was so happy! I couldn't do anything, but she still loved and cared for me like a family member," Mrs. Kinh shared.

Many families in Phu Long 1 village, whenever they encounter incidents or difficulties, receive meaningful sharing from Mrs. Tinh. She not only contributes her own efforts but also mobilizes women in the village to join hands, helping people with farming and rice planting. Such as the cases of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tu, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Luyen... those who were supported by Mrs. Tinh and women in the village in times of hardship.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Trang (45 years old, Phu Long 1 village) has a congenital heart disease, raising 3 children alone in a difficult situation. Ms. Tinh initiated the program "collecting scrap to help the poor". At first, she quietly went to collect each discarded bottle and can herself. When the villagers learned about the meaning of her work, they were moved, and everyone kept their bottles and brought them to Ms. Tinh's house. Thanks to that cooperation, each month she collected 150,000 VND to support Ms. Trang.

Ms. Tinh confided: "I feel sorry for women who suffer. I help with whatever I can, rice from home, money from selling rice, paddy... I share whatever I can."

Ms. Tinh has organized many charity activities, from helping the poor, calling for donations for children in difficult circumstances, to giving food to people. She and the women's association regularly maintain programs such as "Breakfast of love", "Jar of love rice", "Collecting scrap to help the poor"... Every year, from that sharing heart, the association donates nearly 200kg of rice, organizes cooking and distributes hundreds of free meals each month.

With these charitable contributions, in 2024, Ms. Tinh was honored to receive the Certificate of Merit for "Outstanding Women" from the Vietnam Women's Union and was recognized by the Provincial People's Committee with a Certificate of Merit for her outstanding achievements in studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style, period 2021-2023. This is a worthy recognition for an example of a compassionate woman, quietly sowing the seeds of goodness in the community.
