Indian man survives after suffering over 100 mini-strokes in just one week

For six months, the man experienced weakness in his right arm and leg, difficulty speaking, and difficulty understanding what others were saying. He visited several doctors for examination but could not get a proper diagnosis.

He eventually went to BLK Max Hospital in Delhi, where Dr Vinit Banga discovered that the man had a blockage in his carotid artery, leading to transient ischemic attacks.

Upon further examination, Dr. Banga discovered that the blood flow in his right carotid artery was only 90 percent, while the left carotid artery was completely blocked. This lack of blood flow to the brain had caused repeated mini-strokes more than 100 times.

"Initially, the ischemic episodes occurred only once or twice a week and each lasted less than five minutes. But then the frequency gradually increased. The number of ischemic episodes increased during the day and the duration of each episode also increased, usually from 10 to 15 minutes," said Dr. Banga .

The patient was a smoker and this may have been a risk factor for the condition. To treat it, doctors performed surgery by placing an intracranial stent to prevent the risk of the artery becoming blocked again. The patient's health is gradually recovering.

Strokes are mainly caused by a sudden blockage of blood flow to the brain or a brain hemorrhage. In addition to smoking, other factors that increase the risk of stroke include heavy alcohol consumption, stress, weight gain, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health problems.

Common signs of a stroke include weakness or paralysis on one side of the body, inability to speak normally, loss of control of facial muscles on one side, dizziness, severe headache, sudden loss of consciousness and coma. When these signs are seen, the patient needs to be taken to the hospital as soon as possible, according to The Times of India .
