Sharing with the press, a representative of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, Ministry of Health said that Circular 26/2025/TT-BYT, recently issued by the Ministry of Health, has been adjusted. Regulations on cases where a patient visits multiple specialists in one visit, the hospital will decide who prescribes the medicine, ensuring that the patient only has one prescription, safety (no duplication, drug interactions) and effectiveness, and reasonableness of the prescription.
The Circular also adds a number of mandatory information fields in the prescription such as information about the patient's personal identification number or citizen identification number or passport number.
The prescriber also needs to clearly state the amount to use each time, the number of times to use per day, and the number of days to use the medicine in the prescription for the patient.
This Circular also abolishes the medical examination book form. Patients who come to the medical facility for examination or complete inpatient treatment will have their prescriptions filled out and managed with appropriate medical records.
In addition, the Circular also updates new regulations under the 2023 Law on Medical Examination and Treatment, such as drug prescription must comply with technical regulations issued or recognized by the Minister of Health ; the use of drugs in medical examination and treatment must ensure the following principles: Prescribing drugs when absolutely necessary, for the right purpose, safe, reasonable and effective. Drug prescription must also be consistent with the diagnosis and condition of the patient...
The highlight of this Circular is the issuance of 252 lists of diseases and groups of diseases that are applicable to outpatient prescriptions for over 30 days. Accordingly, the prescriber will decide the number of days of use of each drug in the prescription, based on the clinical condition and stability of the patient to prescribe the drug with the maximum number of days of use of each drug not exceeding 90 days.
Thus, in cases where documents used as a basis for prescribing drugs such as drug instructions, diagnosis and treatment instructions, and the Vietnamese national pharmacopoeia do not provide instructions on the number of days of drug use, prescribers have a basis to decide to prescribe up to 90 days for patients appropriately.
At the Breast Clinic of K Hospital on July 1, many patients expressed excitement when receiving information that they would be given medicine every 3 months instead of once a month as before.
The leader of K Hospital said that applying prescriptions for patients according to Circular 26/2025/TT-BYT not only improves the effectiveness of patient care, creates favorable conditions for doctors and medical staff, but also reduces the pressure on patients when coming to see a doctor, receive medicine for treatment, especially for patients living in provinces far from Hanoi .
