The Premier League continues to dominate the transfer market. |
According to Transfermarkt , since the beginning of June, the total amount of money spent by Premier League teams on new players has reached £2.26 billion, 12.7% more than the £1.97 billion spent in the summer of 2024. The current record is £2.36 billion in the summer of 2023 and with many deals still waiting to be completed before the September 1 deadline, a new record is almost certain to appear.
Once again, the Premier League is far ahead of the other major leagues. The total amount spent by Premier League clubs is more than Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and La Liga combined. In England alone, clubs’ net spending is negative £1bn, while across Europe, only La Liga is in the red, at a slight £35m.
Notably, the three most expensive contracts were all deals to sell players from the Bundesliga to the Premier League: Florian Wirtz joined Liverpool from Leverkusen for £116 million, Hugo Ekitike also joined Liverpool for £79 million and Benjamin Sesko joined MU from RB Leipzig for £73.7 million. Outside the Premier League, Serie A spent the most with £783 million, but still lower than the Premier League's deficit in buying and selling.
This year’s transfer window was unusual in that it actually had two open periods. The first period, from June 1 to June 10, was specially authorised by FIFA to facilitate the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. During that short period, clubs spent a total of £400m, with Man City alone spending around £108m to bring in Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Tijjani Reijnders.
The market then reopened on June 16 and will close on September 1. English clubs continue to make "blockbuster" spending. So far, 6 clubs have broken their own shopping records, including Brentford (42.5 million pounds for Ouattara), Bournemouth (34.6 million for Diakite), Burnley, Sunderland, Nottingham Forest (twice) and Liverpool with the "blockbuster" Wirtz.

Of the 20 clubs, 16 have broken their transfer record in the last four years. Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City and Arsenal have all spent at least £100m on a player. Manchester United spent around £200m this summer, but the record deal still belongs to Paul Pogba (£91m, 2016).
In La Liga, only Atletico Madrid (£153m) and Real Madrid (£147m) spent more, but still far behind Liverpool's £289.5m. PSG spent £90m, Juventus £103m, Leverkusen £100m, Leipzig £98m, AC Milan £93m, while Barcelona spent just £22.5m. Outside the Premier League, the biggest deal was Luis Diaz's move to Bayern Munich for £65.5m.
As the clock counts down to September 1, a number of blockbuster deals could emerge. Alexander Isak (Newcastle, valued at £150m) is on Liverpool's radar, while Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace) and Eberechi Eze are in the sights of the big boys.
Not to mention, Yoane Wissa, Alejandro Garnacho, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku are also rumored to be leaving in internal transfer deals in English football.
The BBC believes the Premier League could hit the £2.5 billion mark in the 2025 summer transfer window, breaking the all-time record.
