Suspect in UnitedHealthcare CEO Murder Is Outraged at Insurance Industry

(CLO) Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of health insurance group UnitedHealthcare, was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania on December 9.

When he was arrested, Mangione was carrying a gun equipped with a silencer and a handwritten statement that allegedly expressed his motive for carrying out the attack.

The statement, which is about two and a half pages long and 262 words long, directly addresses UnitedHealthcare and the health insurance industry in general, according to police. Mangione criticizes insurance companies for putting profits above customer care, and expresses frustration that the industry makes huge profits without improving the health and longevity of Americans.

“The reality is that these companies have become so powerful, they continue to exploit the country for their own profit… These parasites deserve to be punished. I apologize for any violence, but it has to happen,” reads a passage from the leaked document.

Mangione asserted that he acted alone and did not receive money from any organization or individual.

The assassination took place in Manhattan on December 4. At the scene, police found three bullet casings engraved with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” These words are reminiscent of the title of a book criticizing the insurance industry, reinforcing suspicions that the motive for the assassination was related to a feud with the industry.

Mangione is currently in custody in Pennsylvania and faces multiple charges, including illegal possession of a weapon, use of false documents and murder. Manhattan prosecutors are in the process of extraditing him to New York for trial.

The case has attracted widespread attention, not only because of the high-ranking victim but also because of the serious social issues surrounding the health care and insurance systems in the United States. Mangione is scheduled to appear in court on December 23 to face formal charges.
