Model garden specializing in producing vegetable seedlings of Mr. Hoang Van Kien in Nam Uy village, Quang Ngoc commune.
In village 4, Van Son commune (old), now Tan Ninh commune, Mr. Nguyen Dai Dao has turned his family's 3,000m2 garden into a place specializing in growing ornamental peach trees for high economic efficiency. According to Mr. Dao, the garden used to be a fish pond but was not very effective because of stagnant water. Throughout the garden were many miscellaneous plants, along with a pig pen system in the middle of the residential area causing environmental pollution. From 2017-2018, when Van Son commune (old) was building a model new rural area, his family was mobilized to renovate it to build a model garden. He invested tens of millions of VND to buy land to fill the pond, build garden infrastructure, buy fertile soil to improve the surface soil, build surrounding walls, divide plots, build internal garden roads and a scientific irrigation system. By 2019, he was determined to renovate it into a garden specializing in growing ornamental plants, and to date the total investment has reached 120 million VND. In return, the garden has been profitable since the first year and has increased steadily over the years. Having a lot of experience in growing peach trees, he bought mature peach trees collected during Tet to take care of.
“From my successes, I have developed traditional peach trees in all areas around the house, along the alley, and even in the yard. In recent years, I have also mastered the technique of grafting new peach varieties that are highly priced and easy to sell on the market onto traditional peach trees. Thanks to that, I do not have to wait 3 years for a batch of peach trees like many other places, but shorten the time, and sell a batch every year,” said Mr. Dao. Under the peach trees, he maintains a flock of free-range chickens to earn more income. According to the garden owner's calculations, in recent years, the family has always had a revenue of about 300 million VND from the garden, minus all costs of fertilizer, buying peach trees... still has a profit of about 180 million VND/year; creating regular jobs for 2 workers in the family.
With 1 sao of land on the side of his house, Mr. Hoang Van Kien in Nam Uy village, Quang Ngoc commune has transformed it into a garden with a roof to adjust the light, specializing in intensive cultivation of vegetable seedlings. Seeds are sown in batches for 4 seasons, bringing in hundreds of millions of VND in revenue. According to Mr. Kien, this is the result of renovating mixed gardens, building model gardens in Quang Ngoc commune and Quang Xuong district (old) according to the advanced new rural development program. In 2021, his family changed their thinking and working methods, invested capital to buy more colored soil to cover the garden, install a net cover system, build drainage ditches, and paths in the garden. In particular, the family also invested tens of millions of VND to install a sprinkler irrigation system to keep the soil environment moist, and the seeds grow well.
From a systematic investment, he switched to specializing in buying seeds to grow vegetables such as kohlrabi, cabbage, cauliflower, etc., each season has its own variety all year round. Seedlings are only about 15 to 25 days old, when they have 3-4 leaves, they are pulled out, packed in banana leaf pots and supplied to vegetable growing areas in many places inside and outside the province. Accordingly, the land turnover coefficient is very high, dozens of batches each year. A model garden that applies scientific advances to production has been in the effective stage for many years. In recent years, the total income from this model garden has brought in about 120 million VND, with a profit of about 100 million VND per year. Just hanging around the garden all year round, Mr. Kien has built a spacious house and raised his children to be successful in their studies.
According to the Thanh Hoa Province Gardening and Farming Association, many model gardens and household gardens have profits of hundreds of millions of VND each year thanks to the application of scientific advances in production, typically: The ornamental garden specializing in growing rare orchids combined with raising civets of Mr. Le Van Hung, Tay Anh Vinh village, Hoang Loc commune, has an income of more than 2 billion VND each year; the model garden of Mr. Phan Van Nhu, Ho Nam village, Ho Vuong commune, grows ornamental plants, intensive fruit trees combined with organic livestock, with a revenue of more than 300 million VND each year; the model garden specializing in intensive areca cultivation combined with beekeeping of Ms. Nguyen Thi Van in Thanh Vinh village, Xuan Lap commune, has a profit of more than 200 million VND each year... Hundreds of examples can be cited of household gardens and NTM model gardens that not only have the effect of developing the economy and creating more jobs, but most of the gardens also contribute to greening, creating a green - clean - beautiful environment for the countryside.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the province currently has more than 24,000 farms and gardens producing and trading in the fields of cultivation, animal husbandry or a combination. Of these, more than 5,000 gardens have an area of 500m2 or more, built according to the criteria of model gardens and household gardens of the National Target Program on New Rural Development.
