Increase both quality and quantity

This year, 128 short films were submitted to the competition, with 114 eligible films and 63 selected for posting on thanhnien.vn . The selection committee, including directors, producers and experts in the fields of cinema, education , etc., then selected the Top 20 finalists. Director Nguyen Quang Dung, a judge throughout the two seasons, said: "Compared to season 1, Vietnamese 2025 has a larger number of films, higher quality, more uniformity, and more genres. It must be said that over time, the directing, filming, sound mixing, editing, etc. are very good. This year is much better than last year, which can be said to be a good thing."

With open themes (allowed by the Cinema Law), filmmakers have freely created to bring different stories. The majority of them are family themes ( Mam nho, Ephemeral, Dieu ngot o lai, Gui me cua me, Khoang dat benh ke song ...) and the lives of young people in modern society ( Camgurl, Tuong lai, Happiness Cards: Loi cau tu bong toi, Diem nhat do ...). Through that, filmmakers send meaningful messages about family love, humanity and bring moments of empathy, leaving many emotions for viewers. Besides, other "hot" topics are also deployed, showing the interest of the young generation in society.

There are short films that "look" at the world in a very different way, the messages conveyed are also very subtle and subtle. Besides, learning about filmmaking methods in the world also brings new ways of implementation, from which interweaving with Vietnamese qualities to create unique works.

Director Ly Hai said: "There are many works that have very good and impressive storytelling and visuals, along with easy-to-understand, emotional stories."

In terms of filmmaking, from purely realistic like season 1, Vietnamese 2025 also recorded many experimental cinematic languages. Accordingly, works such as On the top of the cupboard, under the tree pot, kept in the heart or Small fish, Sending to mother's mother, A story of Tam and Cam , Black and white or (Inside a movie)... brought many surprises in content and transmission. Here, young filmmakers invited the audience to think more deeply, thereby introducing non-linear, surreal stories, full of metaphorical colors...

Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan, President of the Vietnam Association for the Promotion of Cinema Development, former Director of the Department of Cinema and President of the Jury of the competition, said: "There are short films that "look" at the world in a very different way, the messages conveyed are also very subtle and tactful. Regarding the genre, the addition of the documentary category also makes this year's awards season more exciting. Accordingly, all three films Con ton me ngan, Giay gio and Chi Su all convey messages of living beautifully and living kindly, even though they are just ordinary citizens with quiet jobs in this society. This year, the number of veteran artists participating in short films is also greater, including Meritorious Artist Ngoc Tan ( Gui me cua me ), Meritorious Artist Pham Huy Thuc ( Dieu gian di ), Tu Oanh ( Mam nho )..., thereby showing that it is the novel script and unique perspective of the filmmakers that made these prominent names agree to participate.

Step up for young people

Actress and producer Thu Trang said: "This is the first year I have been invited to be a judge for a short film competition. With the Top 20, I can see that you have invested a lot, from creativity, effort to budget. There are works that give me the feeling that you are very willing to spend, not sparing anything to satisfy your passion". She highly appreciates young filmmakers because this generation has the opportunity to approach and practice early as well as the ability to learn quickly. Talking about acting expertise, Thu Trang expressed: "There are very attractive roles, making me drawn into the film, wanting to see what they portray and how they do it. These are actors with a very promising future. Hopefully after the competition, producers, investors, directors... will give them opportunities to develop more".

"Shark" Minh Beta - Chairman of Beta Group expressed that he was "very surprised at the quality of the participating films. All of them were invested in carefully and meticulously. The directing work has many young potential faces, hoping to become new names in Vietnamese cinema". In the role of an investor, he hopes that through the competition, young filmmakers will become more mature, have more experience and very much look forward to cooperating with the new generation to bring to the public new, quality and more unique works in the near future.

Assessing the role of Vietnamese 2025 , director Nguyen Quang Dung revealed: "Contests like Vietnamese are very lucky for young people. If the previous generation had to wait until there were exams or graduation exams to make short films, now there are more and more opportunities. In addition, the conditions for making films are becoming easier, so it can be said that young filmmakers currently own a healthy environment to develop. That environment helps creators determine whether they have talent or not, and is also an opportunity to find "collaborators", teams with the same passion and goals, and from there will go together in the near future. In addition, the previous generation is always looking for new factors in this industry, so filmmakers will have the opportunity to approach investors and professional producers".

The closing ceremony and award ceremony of the short film contest VN - Vietnamese 2025 took place at 2:00 p.m. today, August 21, at Beta Cinemas Ung Van Khiem (HCMC) with the participation of many famous names such as Dr. Ngo Phuong Lan - President of the Vietnam Cinema Promotion and Development Association, director Ly Hai, director Nguyen Quang Dung, actress - producer Thu Trang, producer - "shark" Minh Beta, actress - producer Dinh Ngoc Diep, actress Thuy Ngan, director Nguyen Thi Tham, critic Le Hong Lam... with MC - Runner-up Hoang Oanh - Quang Huy, contestants and movie lovers.
